English translation
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Pack your rows closely together, bring them near one another, and align your necks. By Him in whose Hand is my soul, I see the devil entering through the gaps in the row like a small lamb.”

After tawhid, prayer is the second pillar of the religion; after faith it is the most important obligation of all. Among Muslims there is one group that does not pray at all, and concerning them the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that what stands between faith and disbelief is the abandonment of prayer (Tirmidhi). The second group is that which does perform the prayer but is not regular about praying in congregation. Concerning congregational prayer the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that praying in congregation is twenty-seven degrees greater than praying alone (reported by Bukhari).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave his ummah various directions regarding prayer in congregation. One of them is care for the rows. He said that the best row for men, the one with the most good and blessing, is their first row, and the worst is their last row; for women the guidance is the opposite (reported by Muslim). A noble hadith shows that the greater the number of worshippers in a congregation, the greater the reward (reported by Abu Dawud). If there are only two people praying, one should be the imam and the other should stand on his right, level with him — for Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that one night he prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Prophet made him stand on his right (reported by Bukhari and Muslim).

Concerning the imam, the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are that the imam of the people should be the one who has the most knowledge of the Holy Qur’an. If people are equal in that quality, then the one with the most knowledge of the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) should lead; and if they are equal in that too, then the eldest should lead (reported by Muslim). In another hadith he said that when one of you leads people in prayer he should shorten the recitation, because among the followers there are children, the aged, the weak and those with pressing needs; but when a person prays alone he may pray as he wishes (reported by Bukhari).

To the followers he gave the direction that they should follow the imam: when he says Allahu Akbar the follower should say Allahu Akbar; when he bows the follower should bow; when he says Sami‘a Allahu liman hamidah the follower should say Allahumma rabbana laka’l-hamd; and when the imam prostrates the follower should prostrate (reported by Abu Dawud). In short, he should follow the imam in every way and should not get ahead of the imam in anything.

Regarding the iqamah, it comes that the takbir for prayer would be called upon seeing the Prophet (peace be upon him) come out, and the people would straighten the rows before he took his place (reported by Muslim). In another narration it comes thus, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: at the iqamah for prayer, do not stand up until you see me (reported by Muslim).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said that one should come to prayer with composure, calm and dignity (reported by Bukhari) — that is, one should not rush and run in order to catch a rak‘ah somehow.
