English translation
Narrated Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ said: “Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and set the captive free.”

In this blessed hadith the Messenger ﷺ has set out three important social commands. Although these commands are not obligatory upon every single person, according to one’s circumstances their importance is very great, and an immense reward has been promised for those who act upon them.

The first instruction is to feed the hungry. Feeding a hungry person is an extremely important act, and it has been emphasised most strongly with regard to one’s neighbour. Another narration puts it this way: that man has not believed in me, and he is not of my community, who sleeps the night with a full stomach and free of care while his neighbour is hungry and he knows of his hunger (reported by al-Ṭabarānī). In feeding the hungry there is no distinction between Muslim and non-Muslim; this is a right of the non-Muslim too. Included in feeding the hungry are giving water and the like to drink, providing clothing, and meeting the other basic needs of the needy.

The second instruction is to visit and care for the sick. Generally, visiting the sick is understood to mean no more than asking after the patient’s condition, whereas its meaning is far broader: that is, if a patient cannot bear the expenses of his own treatment, then arranging his treatment and medicine to the extent of one’s means is also part of this care. Islam has given great importance to visiting the sick. Visiting the sick is not merely a requirement of communal life; it is a religious right that one Muslim has over another, and at the same time it is a necessary demand of one’s attachment to and love for Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. One who maintains a bond with Allah cannot remain unconcerned with Allah’s servants; neglecting to visit the sick is in reality neglect of Allah Himself. That is why the visiting of the sick has been urged in various ways in many hadiths. One hadith states: “On the Day of Judgement Allah will say to the son of Adam: O son of Adam, I was sick and you did not enquire after Me. The servant will say: O my Master and Sustainer, how could I have nursed You or enquired after Your health, when You are the Lord of the Worlds (what has sickness to do with You, and how could it reach Your court)? Allah will say: Did you not know that such-and-such a servant of Mine had fallen ill, and you did not visit him nor ask after him? Did you not know that had you enquired after him and nursed him, you would have found Me with him. O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you did not feed Me. The servant will say: (O Lord!) how could I have fed You, when You are the Lord of the Worlds (what have You to do with eating)? Allah will say: Did you not know that such-and-such a servant of Mine asked you for food and you did not give him food? Did you not know that had you fed him you would have found that with Me. O son of Adam, I asked you for (water) to drink and you did not give Me to drink. The servant will say: how could I give You to drink, when You are the Lord of the Worlds (what have You to do with drinking)? Allah will say: such-and-such a servant of Mine asked you for water to drink and you did not give him to drink. Listen! had you given him water to drink, you would have found that with Me.” (reported by Muslim)

The third matter drawn to our attention is securing the release of the captive. What is meant here are those prisoners who have been unjustly detained, or whose release holds the hope of good and righteousness. To have such prisoners freed is a most meritorious act. If someone has been imprisoned for being unable to repay a debt, then having him freed and helping to pay off that debt is likewise an act of great reward.
