English translation
Qatadah ibn Milhan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us saying: "Fast the Ayyam al-Bid — that is, the 13th, 14th and 15th of the month," and he used to say that fasting these three days of the month is, in terms of reward, equal to fasting permanently (all the time). (Abu Dawud and Nasa'i)
Like prayer and zakat, one measure of fasting is a pillar of Islam and an essential condition — without which a Muslim's life cannot become an Islamic life — namely the fasts of the whole month of Ramadan. Besides this, the Shariah of Islam also teaches voluntary (nafl) fasts, like the other voluntary acts of worship, for spiritual training, for the purification of the self, and to attain a special nearness to Allah; and by describing the special virtues of particular days and occasions it has given special encouragement to these voluntary fasts. But along with this, the Prophet ﷺ also took full care that people should not go beyond the limit of moderation in voluntary fasts, nor observe them with the same insistence and strictness as obligatory fasts; rather, keeping within the bounds set by Allah, they should discharge their obligatory duties as obligations and keep the voluntary acts in the rank of voluntary acts.
From this blessed hadith we learn the special importance of the fasts of the 13th, 14th and 15th of the month, which are also called the fasts of Ayyam al-Bid, and whoever observes them receives a reward like that of fasting the whole month.
