It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "However much interest (riba) may increase, its final outcome is scarcity and loss."

(Musnad Ahmad, Sunan Ibn Majah, Bayhaqi)

In this hadith the "final outcome" means the outcome in the Hereafter — that is, the people who increase their wealth in this world through interest and here become millionaires and billionaires will, in the world to come, be utterly destitute, beggared and in want of a single penny, and this very wealth of theirs will be a burden and a torment for them, just as Allah has informed us in the Holy Qur'an and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his sayings.

In one place Allah says:

"Allah (ever) diminishes interest and increases charity." (Al-Baqarah — 276)

That is, there is no blessing (barakah) in wealth gained from interest; rather even the principal is lost. Wealth from interest outwardly appears to be growing, but in reality it is shrinking — like a man whose body swells up with a tumour: it is a disease, or the herald of death. The wealth of charity, on the other hand, outwardly appears to be shrinking but in reality grows — like a patient whose intestines are cleaned out to rid him of disease, whereby his health improves.

Those who consume interest are entirely deprived of that true ease and honour which is the real gain and fruit of wealth. In this light it is quite correct to say that however much wealth a usurer earns through his interest-based dealings, he remains forever deprived of the true enjoyment and fruit of wealth, and thus, despite being wealthy, he is in fact poor and empty-handed.
