English translation
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that (once) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by a dead kid of a goat whose ears were very small, or which had no ears at all. Looking at it he (ﷺ) said (to the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all): “Is there anyone among you who would like to have this (dead kid) for a dirham?” The Companions said, “We would not like to have it for anything.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “By God! This world (with all its pleasures and comforts) is far more worthless and lowly in the sight of Allah than this dead kid is contemptible and paltry in your sight.” (Muslim)

One can gauge from this hadith the matchless zeal for guiding and nurturing His servants that Allah had placed in the blessed heart of the noble Messenger (ﷺ). He was walking along the road when his gaze fell upon the dead kid of a goat; and instead of turning his face away and passing on, he drew the Companions' attention and, taking an important lesson from its state, told them: as contemptible and lowly as this dead kid is in your eyes, far more contemptible and lowly is this world in the sight of Allah. So do not make this world the focus of your seeking and concern, but be seekers of the Hereafter, which never comes to an end. Allah in the Glorious Qur'an, and the noble Messenger (ﷺ) in the blessed ahadith, have mentioned again and again the impermanence and transience of the world. In one place Allah addresses His servants thus:

“This worldly life (and all its provisions) is but for the enjoyment of a few days, and the Hereafter is the true abode of settlement.” (Al-Mu'min, 39)

That is, the life of this world compared to the Hereafter is like a single hour of morning or evening, whereas the Hereafter has no decline or extinction, nor any departure or moving on from it; whether one enters Paradise or Hell, the life of both is everlasting — death will come neither to the people of Paradise nor to the people of Hell.

In this blessed hadith the noble Messenger (ﷺ) has, through the dead kid of a goat, alerted us to the reality that this world is not in itself worth a person forgetting, in love and pursuit of it, the profit and loss of the Hereafter. Rather, the real thing is love and pursuit of the Hereafter, whose life too is eternal and whose blessings are undying. Hence the true object of life should be love and pursuit of the Hereafter, not love and pursuit of the world — for love and desire of the world is the root of every sin, while indifference to the world is the foundation of every act of worship.

This is why one caught up in the love of the world has no sincerity or purity in his deeds; rather his every act rests on corrupt motive and greed, even if it be some religious or devotional work. By contrast, in every act of the one who has adopted indifference to the world, sincerity, purity and the interest of the Hereafter alone are seen, even if it be some worldly work. May Allah grant us all a true understanding of the reality of the world and its impermanence and transience, and grant us the ability to prepare for the eternal, everlasting life of the Hereafter. Ameen!
