English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah al-Bahili (RA) that two men were mentioned before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — one of them a worshipper (abid) and the other a scholar (alim) — (and the Prophet ﷺ was asked which of the two is superior). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like my superiority over the lowest among you.” Then he added: “Truly Allah, His angels, and all the creatures of the heavens and the earth — even the ants in their holes and the fish (in the water) — send blessings and pray, each in its own way, for those who teach people good.” (Tirmidhi)

This blessed hadith shows that a scholar attains very great honour and merit and has superiority and precedence over the worshipper. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ explained the difference between the worshipper and the scholar by saying that just as I have superiority over the lowest among you, so too a scholar has superiority over a worshipper. Clearly, the superiority the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has over a lowly person cannot be measured; likewise it is difficult to gauge the rank and degree of the scholar's superiority and precedence over the worshipper.

Regarding the scholars, Allah says: “Of Allah's servants, only the scholars fear Him.” (Fatir, 28) — that is, the fear of Allah is found only in the hearts of the scholars, because through knowledge they become aware of Allah's tremendous power, majesty and attributes, and the more knowledge of the Lord they gain from that learning, the more they fear Him. So those who have no fear of Allah within them should know that they are deprived of true knowledge.

By 'scholar' in this blessed hadith is meant a scholar of the Qur'an and Hadith who, while observing the obligatory duties and the sunnahs, is engaged in teaching and learning; and by 'worshipper' is meant a person who spends most of his time in the worship of Allah. The scholar is given precedence over the worshipper, and the reason is that the benefit of the worshipper's voluntary prayers and abundant remembrance is confined to his own self — he has no interest in spreading knowledge, nor is teaching and learning his aim; rather he remains occupied in worship at all times. The scholar's benefit, on the other hand, is transitive: his benefit is not confined to himself but reaches other people too. The scholar's work is teaching and instruction, calling and preaching, and propagating and spreading the religion; and clearly, if one examines closely the merit of spreading knowledge and of teaching and learning, it will be found that this deed holds the highest rank in terms of benefit.

At the end of the hadith it is stated that all the creatures in the heavens and the earth pray for the forgiveness of the scholar; Allah sends His mercy upon the teacher of good, the angels seek forgiveness for him, and all other creatures pray for good for him — this too shows the merit of knowledge and of the scholar.

Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: “Seeking knowledge is superior to voluntary prayer, because the knowledge being sought is either an individual obligation (fard 'ayn) or a communal obligation (fard kifayah), and clearly both of these are in any case superior to voluntary (nafl) acts.”

May Allah grant us all the ability to acquire the knowledge of the religion, to understand it, and to act upon it. Ameen!
