English translation
It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Hazrat Aisha Siddiqa (RA), that the practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding voluntary (nafl) fasts was that he would (sometimes) begin fasting continuously, without a break, until we would think that he would not stop fasting; and (sometimes, on the contrary) he would not fast and would pass days on end without fasting, until we would think that he would never fast again. Then Hazrat Aisha Siddiqa (RA) said: I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast a complete month other than Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more in any month than in Sha'ban (that is, he did not fast as many days in any other month besides Ramadan as he did in the month of Sha'ban). (Bukhari and Muslim)
The opening sentences of the hadith mean that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not always keep voluntary fasts; rather, his blessed practice in this matter was that sometimes he would fast continuously for a considerable period, so much so that, seeing the abundance and continuity of his fasts, people would suppose that he would perhaps never end this series of fasting; and sometimes it would happen that he would not fast continuously for a long time, so that people would think that perhaps he would now never keep voluntary fasts at all.
That is, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had no fixed, set routine or custom regarding voluntary fasts. The purpose was that there should be no difficulty or hardship for the ummah in following him; rather, the way of ease should remain open, and every person could follow one of his practices according to his own circumstances and capacity.
The closing sentences of the hadith mean that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept a full month's fasts with complete diligence only in Ramadan (which Allah the Blessed and Exalted has made obligatory); however, in Sha'ban he fasted more than in the other months.
Being diligent about the fasts of Sha'ban creates further nearness to Ramadan and a greater affinity with its special lights and blessings. These fasts of Sha'ban have the same relation to the fasts of Ramadan as the sunnah and voluntary prayers offered before the obligatory prayers have to those obligatory prayers.
May Allah grant us all the ability and strength to act upon the sunnahs of the Master of both worlds ﷺ. Ameen!
