English translation
Mu‘awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “On the Day of Resurrection the mu’adhdhins (those who call to prayer) will have the longest necks of all people.”
All the things regarded as symbols of Islam and the Muslims are called the emblems of Islam (sha‘a’ir) — such as the Noble Qur’an, the two Holy Sanctuaries, the mosques, sacred places, and the prayer. The adhan too is among the emblems of Islam, and the hadiths mention great virtue in giving it. The adhan holds a very high rank among the remembrances of Allah; in it the testimony of God’s oneness and of the Messenger’s prophethood is proclaimed, and through it the glory of Islam is manifested — which is why the virtue and reward of giving the adhan are so great. If we reflect, the few words of the adhan contain a most comprehensive proclamation of the basic principles of the religion and an effective call to it; it is as though a mighty call to the faith is broadcast from our mosques five times each day. Nowadays mosques usually have appointed mu’adhdhins, but if someone is praying, other than the mosque’s mu’adhdhin, in a place the adhan has not reached, giving the adhan there before the prayer is recommended, and one should certainly gain the virtue of the adhan on such occasions and never fall short in attaining it whenever the chance arises. Concerning the meaning of “longest necks,” the scholars differ: some say it means that those who give the adhan in this world will have great reward and rank on the Day of Resurrection; some say the mu’adhdhins will be leaders on that Day; and some say it means that the mu’adhdhins will be full of hope for reward while all people are in grief and anxiety over the reckoning, awaiting in ease and comfort the command to enter Paradise. The secret of the extraordinary virtues of the adhan and the mu’adhdhin is that the adhan is the emblem of faith and Islam and, in its meaning and arrangement, a most eloquent and comprehensive call to the religion, and the mu’adhdhin is its caller and, as it were, Allah’s herald and announcer. If we Muslims today did no more than teach the adhan to each of our children and sometimes explain its meaning and message to them, with its worth and detail, according to their age and environment, then, God willing, they would never fall prey to any un-Islamic call. Sadly, today we Muslims have entirely forgotten this reality and giving the adhan has become a lowly occupation. May Allah forgive us this greatest of collective sins and grant us the ability to train and reform ourselves. Amin!
Suddenly the air was filled with the call of the adhan — that cry which shakes the very heart of the mountains.
