English translation
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ص said: “Allah will call out to the people of Paradise, ‘O people of Paradise!’ On hearing this all the people of Paradise will answer, ‘Here we are, our Lord, at Your service; all good is in Your hand and Your will, that You may give it to whom You please.’ Allah will say, ‘Are you — having received the reward of Paradise — well pleased and content with Me?’ They will say, ‘Our Lord, why should we not be pleased and content with You, when You have given us the greatest of bounties and honour, which You have given to none else of Your creation?’ Allah will say, ‘Shall I not give you something even greater and better than that?’ They will say, ‘Our Lord, what could be greater and better than this?’ Allah will say, ‘I bestow upon you My good pleasure, and I shall never be displeased with you thereafter.’”
Allah’s being pleased with His servants is the guarantee of attaining all bounties and felicities; so when the Lord expresses His good pleasure toward the people of Paradise, it is as if all bounties and honours have been granted to them, and the greatest bounty of all — “the vision of Allah” — is itself a fruit and result of this.
First Allah will ask the people of Paradise, “Are you pleased and content with Me?” and when they answer in the affirmative, He will then express His good pleasure toward them — so that it becomes clear that the sign of Allah’s being pleased with a servant is this: when the servants are pleased and content with Allah, one should understand that their Lord too is pleased and content with them.
The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) used to discuss and reflect among themselves about what could be the means of knowing that our Lord is pleased and content with us. In the end they agreed that if we ourselves are pleased and content with our Lord, then we should be certain that our Lord too is pleased and content with us.
At the end of this noble hadith, Allah’s words to His servants — “and I shall never be displeased with you thereafter” — are surely the greatest glad tidings of honour for the people of Paradise: that their Lord will always be pleased and content with them. Clearly, what felicity and bounty could be greater than this? The truth is that even a little of Allah’s pleasure and good favour outweighs the whole of Paradise and all its bounties and felicities, and greater still is that this pleasure and favour be attained permanently and forever. So every person of faith should always make this plea: O Allah, may we be pleased with You, and keep us pleasing to You. Amin!
The good pleasure of the Lord is the purpose of our being;
The Qur’an alone is our law and our companion.
