English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The religion will remain entirely dominant (and established) as long as people continue to hasten to break the fast, because the Jews and Christians delay (in breaking the fast).” (Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah)
The possibilities of excess and severity in fasting were very great. Many people had come to understand that the aim of fasting is only to kill one’s desire and crush one’s self; therefore, the more a person effaces his desire and suppresses his self, the more he is fulfilling the aim of fasting, and to that same degree he is attaining the love and nearness of Allah. Thus, among the religious of ancient faiths, this mentality generally took hold: they greatly lengthened the period of abstaining from eating and drinking, and they would strive to delay breaking the fast as much as possible. They considered it a great weakness, self-indulgence and (something) against religiosity for a person to turn his attention to eating and drinking. So, of their own will, they gave much latitude to the period of their fasts and altered their form, and with their own hands made a straightforward and easy act of worship into a hardship. This is the very point on which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, on various occasions, commanded opposition to the People of the Book — that is, the Jews and Christians.
Another great wisdom in opposing the Jews and Christians is this too: that among the present-day communities of the world it is these two communities that, in many matters, bear resemblance to the community of Islam; and by location too, both are in the very region that gained the honour of being the manifestation of Islam. In such circumstances, three communities living in one and the same land and having uniformity and sameness in the rulings of the Law was not free from danger. There was grave apprehension that the two distorted older laws might influence this fresh, newly-arisen, emerging new Law; therefore the protection of its distinctiveness and the delimitation of its rulings were very necessary, and the sealing of all those back-doors through which there was the least possibility of distortion was unavoidable. From this it is learnt that, for the dominance of the religion, it is necessary that the people of faith preserve their distinctiveness and distinction over other nations.
In this hadith, the meaning of hastening in breaking the fast is that, after the sun has set, one should not delay in breaking the fast; hastening to break the fast after sunset results in opposition to the People of the Book, because they delay breaking the fast until the stars have come out fully and clearly.
