The Mother of the Believers, ‘A’ishah as-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “Tell me, if I come to know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say and what supplication should I make to Allah on that night?” He ﷺ said, “Say this: ‘Allahumma innaka ‘Afuwwun Karimun tuhibbu-l-‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni’ (O my Allah! You are Most Forgiving, Most Generous, and You love to pardon, so pardon me).” (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Musnad Ahmad)

From this blessed hadith we learn two things: first, that righteous and pious people can perceive this night; and second, that after coming to know of this night, what should be done in it — that is, what should be sought from Allah especially in this priceless and mighty night?

Some signs of Laylat al-Qadr are known from certain hadiths and from the experiences of some of the righteous: for example, that in this night, on account of the abundant descent of angels, a special kind of tranquillity and calm is felt; hearts are moved to tenderness; when the sun rises on the morning of this night it is without rays, like the moon of the fourteenth night; this night is neither very cold nor very hot, but temperate; this night is clear, open and bright; and in it the stars of the sky do not shoot and dart here and there.

No particular act of worship has been fixed for this night. Remembrance and recitation, glorification and sanctification, repentance and seeking forgiveness, salutations upon the Prophet and voluntary prayers are the beloved and pleasing deeds of this night. It is better that a little of all these deeds be done; in this way the reward of every kind of deed will be attained, and through this variation performing worship will also become easy.

In this sacred and blessed night the supplications of the servants are accepted, because the angels say “Ameen” to their supplications and also themselves pray for them. It is a matter to reflect upon: that the servant seeks forgiveness from his Lord, the angels say “Ameen” to it, and the Lord of the Worlds forgives him — then what more does he need? This distinction belongs to Laylat al-Qadr alone, and is a clear proof of its greatness.

The servant is, of course, free to ask his Master for whatever he wishes, because Allah is greatly pleased with the servant who spreads out his hands right before his Lord; and since there is no lack of anything in Allah’s treasuries, He fulfils all the desires of His servant. But when the Mother of the Believers, ‘A’ishah as-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught this supplication. The scholars say that this supplication is comprehensive of all the good and welfare of this world and the Hereafter, because, on Allah’s part, pardon, overlooking, forgiveness and remission in the servant’s case is that greatest felicity which is the pinnacle of all good — as is learnt from another narration, that from the servant’s side no request in the court of Allah is better than seeking well-being and forgiveness.

The need for supplication has been placed within human nature. By nature a person supplicates for the very thing whose desire is in his heart, and does so only when he has the certainty and feeling that the thing he seeks is in the power of the Being to whom he is praying. A very important benefit of supplication is this: that whether the supplication is answered or not, it is never devoid of one great benefit — that supplicating is in reality an expression of servitude, which is itself worship, indeed the very soul of worship, of whose reward the servant will not be deprived in any state, whether or not he obtains the thing for which he prayed. Therefore we should all ask of Allah as much as possible, and especially in this precious night. May Allah grant us all the enabling-grace to be enriched with the outpourings and blessings of Ramadan and Laylat al-Qadr. Ameen!

Tonight is a night of repentance from our sins; it is a night to ask for the enabling-grace to act upon new resolves in our hearts. If tonight we do this work with sincerity of heart, then be assured that the distance of years upon the highway of religious and worldly progress can be traversed in a few moments.

O Allah! Great is Your love; Your pardon and overlooking are Your very great generosity. O my Lord! We are needy of You, and You are Self-Sufficient; forgive our sins; make us rich and self-sufficient. O Allah! We are seekers of Your mercy and well-being, so forgive us, for You love to pardon. Ameen, O Lord of the Worlds!
