Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward (that is, believing the Law to be true and holding the conviction that Ramadan’s fasting is obligatory), all his previous sins are forgiven; and (likewise) whoever stands in prayer in Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward (in the nights), all his previous sins too are forgiven; and (likewise) whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of reward (that is, holding faith and conviction in the reality of Laylat al-Qadr), all his previous sins too are forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
Every year the month of Ramadan al-Mubarak comes as a shade over the people of faith, bringing the message of mercy and forgiveness and becoming a springtime of good deeds. Very fortunate and worthy of congratulation are those people who welcome it with the fervour of faith: they fast during the day and stay awake in the nights praying the Tarawih and Tahajjud, seek forgiveness for past sins, and begin a new chapter of righteousness and piety in their deeds. They spend this month in the obedience and servitude of Allah as though this Ramadan were the last Ramadan of their life, and it may be that before the coming Ramadan al-Mubarak the summons of death may arrive and they may not be present in this world to attain its blessings and mercies. For those who welcome the month of Ramadan al-Mubarak with this fervour and, with these resolves, take care to fast and pray the Tarawih, this month is a month of everlasting mercy and forgiveness and of deliverance from the Fire of Hell.
In this blessed hadith, the fasts of Ramadan, the voluntary prayers of its nights, and especially the voluntary prayers of Laylat al-Qadr are declared a sure means of the forgiveness and pardon of past sins — on the condition that these fasts and voluntary prayers are done with faith (iman) and self-accountability (ihtisab). These “iman” and “ihtisab” are special religious terms. The meaning of iman is that the belief about Allah and the Hereafter which Islam has given remains fresh in his mind; and the meaning of ihtisab is that he seeks the pleasure of Allah, keeps watch at all times over his thoughts and deeds lest he be going against Allah’s pleasure, and that behind his deeds and thoughts there be no wrong kind of motive whatsoever — that is, that the basis and driving force of any good deed done be simply believing in Allah and His Messenger, having certainty in their promise and warning, and hope and eagerness for the reward they have told of. By fasting and worshipping in the nights with faith and self-accountability, Allah will forgive his past sins, because even if he was once disobedient to Allah, he has now desisted from disobedience and turned himself back to Allah.
It is by this very faith and self-accountability that the connection of our deeds with Allah is joined; indeed, this very faith and self-accountability are the core and soul of our deeds. If these are not present, then, outwardly, even the greatest of deeds are lifeless and hollow, which — God forbid — may prove counterfeit on the Day of Resurrection; and a single deed done with faith and self-accountability is so dear and valuable with Allah that, by its blessing and grace, the sins of many long years may be forgiven. May Allah, out of His bounty, grant us this trait of faith and self-accountability. Ameen!
