English translation
It is narrated from Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "As long as the people of my Ummah hasten to break the fast, they will remain in a good state."
One who hastens to break the fast — that is, who breaks the fast immediately after the sun has set — has the excellence of being pleasing in the sight of Allah Most High as well. The reason for this is that, by this act of his, he not only follows the Sunnah but also opposes the People of the Book, namely the Jews and Christians.
To hasten in breaking the fast and to delay the pre-dawn meal (sahri) is a sign that people have not strayed from the spirit and true purpose of the religion but are acquainted with its reality; for them, the real importance lies in the spirit of the injunctions and their aims. When a person's sight becomes estranged from the true essence and intent of the religion, then necessarily the result appears in this form: that, in the injunctions, a person falls into undue caution and excess with regard to outward form. This excess and caution of his indicate a great sickness — namely, that he has become heedless of the very thing which ought to have held the real importance in his sight. A task should be carried out in the manner in which one has been commanded to carry it out; a person should be bound to God Himself, and bound to the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, rather than being bound to his own opinion and taste. This is the very demand of taqwa and servitude, which is the real object and purpose of fasting.
In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed out that the condition of this Ummah will remain good only so long as they hasten in breaking the fast. The secret of this is that hastening to break the fast and delaying the pre-dawn meal is the command of the Shari'ah and the pleasure of Allah Most High, and in it there is also ease and facility for the ordinary servants of God — which is a permanent means of Allah Most High's mercy and gaze of grace. So, as long as the Ummah acts upon this, it will remain deserving of Allah Most High's gaze of grace, and its condition will remain good. Conversely, since in delaying the breaking of the fast and hastening the pre-dawn meal there is hardship for all of Allah Most High's servants, and since this is likewise an innovation (bid'ah) and the way of the Jews and Christians, it will therefore, for this Ummah, become a cause of the displeasure of Allah Most High instead of His pleasure and mercy. For this very reason, when the Ummah adopts this way, it will be deprived of Allah Most High's gaze of grace, and its condition will deteriorate.
