English translation
Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was present in a gathering of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in which he described Paradise, praising it to the utmost. At the end he said: "In Paradise there are such bounties as no eye has seen, no ear has heard of, nor has their like ever occurred to the heart of any man." Then the Prophet ﷺ recited this verse: (Paradise is for those) "whose sides forsake their beds, calling upon their Lord in fear (of His punishment) and (in hope of His reward), and who spend out of what We have provided them; and no soul knows what comfort of the eyes has been kept hidden for them, as a reward for what they used to do (in the life of this world)."

The Qur'an and the blessed ahadith give very clear details about Paradise and Hell. For example: the fruits of Paradise will resemble the fruits of this world in shape and form, but there is no comparison in their taste and fragrance; in Paradise there is no hunger or thirst; its expanse is as vast as the heavens and the earth; there is no old age or sickness in it; and for the people of Paradise there will be exceedingly beautiful spouses whose beauty is beyond description. Likewise the horrors of Hell are mentioned: for the people of Hell, fire will be their covering and fire their bedding; to drink they will be given a mixture of the blood and pus flowing from wounds; and Hell is so deep that a stone would keep falling into it for seventy years.

These and similar matters are stated in the Qur'an and the ahadith, but their full and true reality is known only to Allah; yet no one can be a Muslim without believing in them. To some superficial people these seem to be the fanciful notions of religious folk, on the grounds that if a thing is not seen or does not fit into reason, how can it be accepted — although to deny something merely because it is not seen or does not fit into reason is itself the height of foolishness.

If reason and the senses are the only criterion, then what is the Hereafter — by whose presence a person lives, and by whose absence a healthy and strong person is delivered to death? Can anyone perceive it with the help of reason and the senses? At the moment when every soul is caught in its grip, can anyone sense it, can any intellect explain it?
