حضور ﷺ کی خواہشِ جہاد
حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا ہے کہ "اس ذات کی قسم جس کے ہاتھ میں میری جان ہے، اگر مسلمانوں کو اس بات کا دکھ نہ ہوتا کہ میں انہیں چھوڑ کر جہاد کے لیے نکل جاؤں (تو ضرور ایسا کرتا) اور میرے پاس اتنی سواریاں نہیں ہیں کہ ہر آدمی کو اپنے ساتھ لے جا سکوں (اگر میں ایسا کر سکتا تو) میں جہاد فی سبیل اللہ کرنے والی کسی بھی فوجی مہم کے پیچھے نہ رہتا۔ قسم ہے اس ذات کی جس کے ہاتھ میں میری جان ہے، میں چاہتا ہوں کہ اللہ کی راہ میں قتل کیا جاؤں پھر زندہ کیا جاؤں، پھر قتل کیا جاؤں پھر زندہ کیا جاؤں، پھر قتل کیا جاؤں۔" (بخاری)
جہاد جس کا مطلب ہے اللہ کی راہ میں کوشش کرنا، یعنی اسلام کے غلبے، اس کے تحفظ اور اس کی اشاعت کے لیے بھرپور سعی اور کوشش کرنا، اب یہ چاہے مال سے ہو، جان سے ہو یا زبان سے۔
مندرجہ بالا حدیث میں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی اس خواہش کا اظہار ہے جو دل کی گہرائیوں سے چاہتے تھے کہ وہ اللہ کے حضور جان کا نذرانہ پیش کریں۔ اسی تعلیم کا نتیجہ تھا کہ صحابہ کرام زندگی سے زیادہ موت کے طالب تھے۔ جہاد ان کی روزمرہ کی زندگیوں میں اس قدر رچ بس چکا تھا کہ ان کے نزدیک جہاد کے بغیر اسلامی زندگی کا تصور ناتمام اور ادھورا تھا۔
ایک صحابیہ حضرت خنساء بنت عمرو رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا جنگ سے پہلے اپنے بیٹوں کو مخاطب کر کے فرماتی ہیں: "خوب سمجھ لو کہ جہاد فی سبیل اللہ سے بڑھ کر اللہ کی کوئی کارِ ثواب نہیں۔ آخرت کی دائمی زندگی دنیا کی فانی زندگی سے کہیں بہتر ہے۔ کل اللہ کی نصرت مانگتے ہوئے دشمنوں پر ٹوٹ پڑنا، اور جب دیکھو کہ لڑائی کا تنور خوب گرم ہے اور جنگ کے شعلے بھڑک اٹھے ہیں تو خاص کر آتشدان میں گھسا جانا اور دیوانہ وار تلوار چلانا، ہو سکے تو دشمن کے سپہ سالار پر حملہ کرنا، اور اگر کامیاب رہے تو بہتر اور اگر شہادت نصیب ہوئی تو یہ بھی بہتر ہے کہ آخرت کی فضیلت کے مستحق ہو گے۔"
اگلے روز میدانِ جنگ گرم ہوا تو اس بوڑھی خاتون نے اپنے کمزور ہاتھ بارگاہِ الٰہی میں اٹھا دیے: "یا الٰہی! میری فانی متاع یہی تھی جو میں نے تیرے حوالے کر دی ہے۔" جنگ کے اختتام پر جب اس بوڑھی عورت کو یہ معلوم ہوا کہ اس کے چاروں بیٹے شہید ہو گئے تو اس نے اللہ کے دربار میں یوں عرض کیا: "اے اللہ! تیرا شکر ہے کہ تو نے مجھے اپنے بیٹوں کی شہادت سے سرفراز فرمایا، اللہ تعالیٰ سے امید ہے کہ وہ اس دن مجھے بچوں کے ساتھ اپنے سایۂ رحمت میں جگہ دے گا۔"

English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, were it not that it would grieve the Muslims for me to leave them behind and go out to fight (I would certainly have done so); and I do not have enough mounts to carry every man with me — (were I able to do so) I would not stay behind from any military expedition that fights in the way of Allah. By the One in whose hand is my soul, I wish that I could be killed in the way of Allah, then brought to life, then killed, then brought to life, then killed."
Jihad means to strive in the way of Allah — that is, to exert every effort for the dominance, protection and propagation of Islam, whether by wealth, by life, or by the tongue.
The above hadith expresses the desire that the Prophet ﷺ held from the depths of his heart: to offer his life as an offering before Allah. It was the fruit of this teaching that the Companions sought death more than life. Jihad had become so ingrained in their daily lives that, to them, the very concept of an Islamic life was incomplete and deficient without it.
A woman Companion, Khansa bint 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with her), addressing her sons before battle, said: "Understand well that there is no act more rewarding to Allah than striving in His way. The everlasting life of the Hereafter is far better than the fleeting life of this world. Tomorrow, seeking Allah's help, fall upon the enemy; and when you see that the furnace of battle is well heated and the flames of war have flared up, plunge into the very heart of it and wield your swords like men possessed; if you can, attack the enemy's commander. If you return victorious, good; and if martyrdom is granted, that too is better, for you will be worthy of the excellence of the Hereafter."
The next day, when the battlefield grew hot, that old woman raised her frail hands to the court of the Almighty: "O my God! This fleeting wealth of mine was all I had, and I have handed it over to You." At the end of the battle, when the old woman learned that all four of her sons had been martyred, she submitted before Allah thus: "O Allah! Thanks be to You that You honoured me with the martyrdom of my sons; I hope Allah the Exalted will, on that Day, grant me a place with my children in the shade of His mercy."
