English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of sacrifice (i.e. the day of Eid al-Adha) the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wished to sacrifice two rams that were horned, black-and-white (of two colours) and castrated. He turned them towards the Qiblah and recited: “I have turned my face towards the One who created the heavens and the earth, upright, upon the religion of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) who believed in the Oneness of Allah, and I am not among the polytheists. Indeed my prayer, all my acts of worship, my life and my death are for Allah alone, the Lord of all the worlds; He has no partner. With this I have been commanded, and I am among the Muslims. O Allah, this is from You and for You, on behalf of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his Ummah. In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.” Then he (peace be upon him) performed the sacrifice.
Islam is the final and beloved religion of Allah; for the guidance of man—the noblest of creation—and for salvation in this world and the Hereafter it stands as a complete code of life. No corner or aspect of human life is left untouched by its eternal teachings. Acts of worship too are an important part of the religion of Islam; indeed, the Lord of the universe has declared that the very purpose of man's creation is worship and servitude. Allah says: “And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Adh-Dhariyat 56) Like prayer, fasting, zakat and Hajj, sacrifice too is an act of worship; and like the other acts of worship it is obligatory upon those believers who are free of disbelief and polytheism. Through His beloved Muhammad (peace be upon him) Allah had it proclaimed: “(O Prophet) say: my prayer, all my worship, my life and my death are purely for Allah alone, the Master of all the worlds.” (Al-An'am 163) Then every believer makes this very declaration in his prayer: “All worship of the tongue, the body and wealth is due to Allah alone.” (Bukhari and Muslim) And whenever some success or joy is attained in life and one wishes to thank his Lord, His beloved Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his Ummah were given the clear command: “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice in His name.” (Al-Kawthar 2)
The Messenger of Allah's supplication at the time of sacrifice—that it be on his own behalf and on behalf of his Ummah, or on behalf of those of his Ummah who did not offer a sacrifice—is clearly a mark of his utmost compassion for the Ummah. But it should be understood here that he (peace be upon him) did not thereby offer the sacrifice on behalf of the entire Ummah, or on behalf of those who did not sacrifice, discharging it for everyone; rather, its meaning is: “O Allah, include my Ummah with me in its reward.” Sharing in the reward is one thing, and the sacrifice being discharged is another.
