English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A man was walking with vanity and arrogance in a pair of striped garments (dressed in them); moreover, (he regarded those garments as so fine and superior that) his self had cast him into pride and self-admiration. (His end was this, that) the earth swallowed that man, and so he will keep sinking down into the earth until the Day of Resurrection." (Bukhari & Muslim)
A person's gait indicates, to a large degree, his temperament and states and his habits and manners; that is why particular emphasis is laid on the point that a man should not adopt a manner of walking that displays some flaw or waywardness in his personality, or some crookedness in his natural states and dispositions. In the Holy Qur'an, Allah has described the walk of His special servants by the word "hawn" and has praised it. Allah says:
"And the (special) servants of the Most Merciful (Allah) are those who walk upon the earth with gentleness, calmness, tranquillity and dignity." (Al-Furqan – 63)
Lexically, "hawn" means calmness and steadiness. The gait that is called hawn is a walk in which there is full movement, but the steps are raised gently and with some measured pace — neither a dead, lifeless walk like that of dry wood, such as the walk of the dead-hearted and dejected, nor a walk of such haste and running as is the manner of those who are hasty and flustered. Both of these forms of gait are bad and reveal the walker's dead-heartedness and lack of sense.
Concerning the man mentioned in this hadith, the scholars hold differing opinions: some say he was Qarun, while others think he was some individual of a certain nation, or some person from an earlier nation. In any case, it is established from the hadith that to walk with pride, arrogance, vanity and haughtiness is extremely evil, and its end is most dreadful and admonitory.
In another blessed hadith, concerning pride, the Master of both worlds ﷺ said thus: "That person will not enter Paradise in whose heart there is even an atom's weight of pride and arrogance." And along with this the Prophet ﷺ also defined pride: that pride is to be arrogant in the face of truth and to look down upon people. (as reported by Muslim)
From this too it is understood what a great moral filth and haughtiness pride is — that no person carrying this haughtiness will be able to enter Paradise; the people of Paradise are only those who are not tainted in the least by every kind of pride and arrogance and this sort of filth.
In reality, pride is this: that a person has no regard for the truth and looks upon people with a gaze of contempt; this thing is clear proof of his inner wickedness. If someone adopts in his life such conduct in which the rights of Allah and truth and honesty are not regarded, or if behind his manner of living, his adornment and finery, and his gait and bearing there works this motive — that others should regard him as great and consider themselves lesser before him — then this way is plainly the way of pride and haughtiness, which can in no way be called correct and proper. With this way of his he can never attain that true greatness which awaits him all his life; and, on the contrary, he will have to suffer a very severe punishment for this pride and haughtiness. In reality, it was this very pride that made Satan accursed and outcast, and his thousands of years of worship availed him nothing.
May Allah grant all Muslims deliverance from the ill-omened disease of pride. Amin.
