English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet ﷺ made fasting on the Day of 'Ashura his practice and commanded the Muslims to do so, and they complied, some of the Companions submitted, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The Jews and Christians observe this day as a great day (and it is a national and religious emblem of the Jews; and our fasting on this particular day entails resemblance to and sharing with them — so is there any change that can be made after which this resemblance and sharing would no longer remain?)" He ﷺ said: "When the coming year arrives, we shall fast on the ninth (of Muharram)." Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: but before the month of Muharram of the next year arrived, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed the Companions' concern shortly before his passing, and he said this in that very month of Muharram; therefore the occasion to act upon this new decision did not come in the blessed lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, but the community received guidance. The aim was to avoid this kind of resemblance and sharing, and it was with this aim that he ﷺ said that, God willing, next year we shall fast on the ninth.

The Prophet's ﷺ decision to fast on the ninth can carry two meanings, and the scholars have stated both. One is that henceforth we shall fast on the ninth together with the tenth of Muharram, and thus our practice will differ from that of the Jews and Christians. Most scholars have preferred this second meaning: that the fast of 'Ashura be kept together with the ninth — so that the ninth be fasted on the day before, and if that is missed, then the eleventh, the day after, may also be fasted — as we also learn from this saying of the Prophet ﷺ: "Fast on 'Ashura, and fast a day before it or after it (along with it)." (reported by Ahmad)

In truth, the Muslim community has a deep historical connection not only with all the earlier prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) but through the true Shari'ah of the religion the Prophet brought; on this basis Muslims should attain the blessing of keeping these historic fasts of the sacred month of Muharram and, beginning their new year with obedience to Allah and the pursuit of good deeds, keep pressing forward. Our prayer before Allah is that this year may bring us a message of joy, and that all Muslims may be freed from the clutches of the tyrannical disbelievers who are bent on trampling our ideological, moral and Islamic being. Ameen.
