English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that: "I never saw the Prophet ﷺ take such great care over the fast of any virtuous day, and be so mindful of it, as he was for this day — the Day of 'Ashura — and for this blessed month of Ramadan (he gave these precedence over other days and other months)." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Allah the Almighty has, alongside every obligatory act of worship, placed some voluntary worship of the same kind: with the obligatory prayers there are voluntary (nafl) prayers; with the obligatory zakat there are voluntary charities at various times; with the obligatory fasts there are voluntary fasts; and with the obligatory Hajj the voluntary Hajj and 'Umrahs have been encouraged.

These voluntary acts are in reality like a fence, or a protective wall, guarding the obligatory duties. Whoever, along with the obligatory duties, is also regular in the voluntary ones truly knows the importance of the obligations and the rank of the voluntary acts; from such a person there is no fear at all that he might ever abandon the obligatory duties. A gardener who does not let any animal reach even the trees of the fence standing at the edges of his garden — is there any fear from him that some animal will sneak into his garden? No precious tree is planted on the fence of the garden, and no precious national wealth is kept at a country's borders; rather, in such places are kept those things which, even if some calamity befalls them despite the safeguards, would not cause great loss, and after a little loss the situation would be brought under control at once. This is exactly the case with voluntary fasts and all voluntary acts of worship. With every Islamic obligation the Shari'ah has placed some voluntary acts like it and has encouraged their performance. Now, if through the turning of circumstances, or the assaults of the self and Satan, some decline begins in a person's system of worship, the first blow will fall upon these voluntary acts, and one or two voluntary acts will be dropped for a few days; but since a believer keeps up these voluntary acts in some degree or other, his strength of faith will not tolerate this decline and lowliness, and his conscience will reproach him, and eventually he will awaken and, before any harm reaches his obligatory duties, he will once again begin observing the sunan, the voluntary acts and the recommended acts.

Besides this, a great benefit of voluntary acts of worship is that the heart becomes accustomed to worship through them, so the obligatory acts do not weigh heavily upon it; likewise, whatever shortcoming remains in a person's obligatory worship is made up through the voluntary acts. Thus the Ahadith have drawn special attention to this particular benefit of voluntary worship.

In the Ahadith of the Prophet ﷺ, encouragement has come to keep voluntary fasts on certain special days. Some of these special days come yearly, such as the fasts of the month of Sha'ban, the six fasts of Shawwal, the fast of the Day of 'Arafah and the fasts of 'Ashura; some come monthly, such as the White Days (three each month); and some are weekly, such as the fasts of Monday and Thursday.

The meaning of this Hadith is that from the conduct of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) understood that, among the voluntary fasts, the Prophet ﷺ took as much care over the fast of the Day of 'Ashura as he did not take over any other voluntary fast, and that he held the fasts of the month of Ramadan to be the most excellent of all fasts. The importance of the fast of 'Ashura can also be gauged from this Hadith: the Prophet ﷺ sent out a man on the Day of 'Ashura and commanded him to call out among the people and announce that whoever had not fasted should fast, and whoever had eaten should complete his abstinence until the night — that is, even one who had eaten or drunk something should not eat or drink anything until the evening, for the reverence and respect of a fasting day is due upon him too.
