Abū Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “By Him in whose hand is my soul, if you were not to commit sins, Allah would take you away and bring in your place a people who would sin and then seek Allah's forgiveness, and He would forgive them.” (Muslim)

The purpose of this noble hadith is to describe the vastness of Allah's forgiveness and mercy, and to make plain that Allah — in order to manifest the glory of His holy name “al-Ghafūr” (the Ever-Forgiving) — is so abundantly forgiving. Even so, people must not be the least bit negligent in repenting from their sins. God forbid that this hadith be taken as an encouragement to sin, for Allah Himself has commanded that we shun sin, and He sent His Messenger ﷺ into this world for the very purpose of drawing people out of a life of sin and disobedience and setting them on the path of obedience and worship.

This hadith states a truth: that only a creature possessing will and choice can sin; a being that is purely compelled has no power to sin. Allah created man as a creature endowed with choice, resolve and will, and in that very capacity man is Allah's vicegerent. Allah is Merciful and Kind, Just, and All-Prevailing — that is, He does whatever He wills. He has placed in man too a measure of mercy and compassion; man dispenses justice and fairness, punishes wrongdoers, and has the capacity to carry out what he wills — and so he too is a possessor of choice.

Yet because man's rank is that of a vicegerent, he ought, by his own will and choice, to be obedient and loyal to the One whose vicegerent he is. In that obedience and loyalty there can at times be heedlessness, folly and slips — which are inevitable for a being possessed of will — and that is precisely what sin is. Had man been like the angels, of whom the Qur'an says: {they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them} (al-Taḥrīm: 6) — a kind of creature that acts without will and choice — then what need would there have been to create man at all? The angels already existed.

Allah desires variety in His creation: sometimes He is pleased to see good deeds accomplished, and sometimes He is pleased to see His servants ashamed of their sins, repenting and seeking His forgiveness before Him. For the obedient He extends the hand of grace at one moment; for sinners He spreads, at another, the cloak of His concealing, forgiving and veiling. If some sinful, rebellious person, drowning in sins and deprived of felicity, were to draw from this prophetic saying the conclusion that Allah wishes only that we sin — and so should indulge freely in evil — that would be his own wretchedness and misfortune; for had Allah wished only that, why would He have sent prophets to every nation and land in every age, and why would He have revealed Books and Scriptures?

Rather, in this saying there is great support and reassurance for those blessed ones who, through human weakness, have committed many sins but who now, out of fear, are wasting away inwardly and crying, ‘Alas, O Allah! What will become of us now?’ For such people this saying teaches that they should let hope prevail over fear and hope over despair, and fix their gaze more upon Allah's mercy than upon His wrath and severity.
