English translation
Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “By the One in whose hand is my life, I had intended to command (a servant) to gather firewood, and when the firewood was gathered to command that the call to prayer be given, and when the adhan was given to appoint someone to lead the people in prayer, and then to go to those men (who do not come to the congregation for prayer without any excuse) and set fire to their houses.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Prayer is not merely an act of worship and a duty; rather it is a sign of faith and an emblem of Islam. Performing it is proof of one's being a Muslim, and abandoning it is a mark of indifference to the religion and of estrangement from Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. For this reason it was necessary that there be some arrangement for performing the prayer such that everyone would fulfil this duty openly, that is, before all. For this, by the guidance of Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established the system of congregational prayer and made it obligatory for every Muslim — who is not excused by illness or some other lawful hindrance — to perform the prayer in congregation.

The special secret and the particular wisdom of this system of congregation is that through it the members of the Ummah are called to account daily — indeed five times a day. Moreover, experience and observation show that, thanks to the congregational system, many people who, through lack of resolve and weakness of zeal, could never maintain such regularity individually, do perform the five daily prayers regularly.

The importance of praying in congregation can be well gauged from this hadith. Congregational prayer, on one hand, strengthens our bond with Allah; on the other hand, through it a durable and firm collective unity comes into being — on the condition that we truly understand and feel the demands of the prayer and all its etiquette.

Allah's refuge! How severe is the warning, and how great the anger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, towards those people who stay away from the congregation without any compulsion. And the significance of this saying increases still further when we see that these words issue from the tongue of a Prophet ﷺ who was the very embodiment of mercy and compassion, whose affection and love for the Muslims Allah, the Lord of Might, has praised in the Noble Qur'an thus: {ra'ufun rahim towards the believers} — that is, (compassionate and merciful towards the believers) (al-Tawbah: 128).

And a Prophet ﷺ who would not even countenance invoking evil against the disbelieving enemies of the Muslims — indeed enemies of their own lives — such an embodiment of mercy uttering words so severe was surely on account of extreme displeasure and under a particular wisdom.

The importance of congregation can also be gauged from this blessed hadith in this way: with what emphasis is the warning of being seized by divine punishment declared for those people who do not come to the mosques — so much so that the Master of both worlds ﷺ himself intended to abandon the congregation and to punish those people for the crime of not being present in the congregation.

Viewed in the light of the present age's ideological outlook, the congregation is the highest manifestation of the idea of equality: five times a day all the servants of Allah, of whatever rank and station in worldly terms, setting aside all their superiority and precedence and their worldly pomp and grandeur, prostrate together with all the ordinary Muslims before Allah, and by the tongue of their state affirm that:

In a single row stood Mahmud and Ayaz —
no servant remained, and no lord of servants.
