ٹخنوں سے نیچے کپڑے لٹکانے پر عذاب
حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ حضور اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا کہ: “ٹخنوں کا جو حصہ پاجامہ کے نیچے رہے گا وہ جہنم میں جائے گا۔” (بخاری)
یعنی ٹخنوں سے نیچے جتنے حصے تک کپڑا لٹکتا ہے، وہ حصہ دوزخ میں ڈالا جائے گا، واضح رہے کہ ٹخنوں سے نیچے کپڑا لٹکانا زمانہ جاہلیت کے متکبروں کا دستور ہے اور اسلام میں تکبر کی سزا دوزخ مقرر کی گئی ہے، اس لیے کپڑوں کا ٹخنوں سے نیچے لٹکانا تکبر کا نشان ہونے کے باعث حرام اور موجبِ آتش قرار دیا گیا ہے۔
آج کل فیشن کے زور میں یہ برائی ہم میں بہت کثرت سے پھیل گئی ہے، اپنے پاجامے، شلواریں وغیرہ ٹخنوں سے نیچے رکھتے ہیں اور بلاوجہ عذاب مول لیتے ہیں، حالانکہ یہ کوئی مشکل بات نہیں ہے کہ انسان اپنے شلوار، پاجامہ یا پتلون کو ٹخنے سے اونچا رکھے، ذرا سی فکر اور تھوڑے سے اہتمام سے یہ کام ہو سکتا ہے۔
ایک اور روایت میں اس طرح آتا ہے کہ جو شخص غرور و تکبر کے طور پر اپنی ازار یعنی پاجامہ و تہ بند یا کوئی اور کپڑا ٹخنوں سے نیچے لٹکائے گا اللہ تعالیٰ قیامت کے دن اس شخص کی طرف رحمت کی نظر سے نہیں دیکھے گا۔ (بحوالہ بخاری و مسلم)
کیونکہ ٹخنے سے نیچے لباس لٹکانے کو کبر کی علامت بتایا گیا ہے اور یہ متکبرین کا شیوہ ہے اور تکبر بھی جہنم میں پہنچانے والا ہے، اس لیے اس بات پر اللہ تعالیٰ ان بندوں پر قیامت کے دن اپنی نظرِ کرم بھی نہیں فرمائے گا، یہاں رحمت سے دیکھنے کی نفی ہے بلکہ اللہ تعالیٰ ایسے بندوں کو عتاب و غضب سے دیکھے گا، اس لیے اس چیز کی عادت ڈالنی چاہیے کہ کبھی بھی لباس ٹخنے سے نیچے نہ ہو۔
بظاہر یہ بہت معمولی بات معلوم ہوتی ہے، مگر طبعی طور پر اس کا اثر انسان پر بہت گہرا ہوتا ہے، اسلام مسلمان مردوں کو جفاکش اور چست دیکھنا چاہتا ہے، ناز و انداز، ڈھیلا ڈھالا ہونا مرد کے لیے کوئی اچھی چیز نہیں ہے، اس لیے شریعت نے مردوں کے لیے ریشمی لباس کی بھی ممانعت کر دی، اسی طرح لباس پہننے کے انداز میں بھی وہ طریقہ مقرر کر دیا ہے جس سے لاشعوری اور طبعی طور پر انسان چست رہے اور مجاہدانہ کارنامے کے لیے ہمہ وقت چوکس ہو۔
غیر مسلم اقوام میں بھی چستی و چالاکی کے لیے بوقتِ ضرورت لباس مختصر کیا گیا ہے چنانچہ کھیل کود کے وقت کے لیے نیکر رائج ہے، اور عام حالات میں ٹخنے سے نیچے تک لباس رائج ہے مگر شریعت اسلامیہ نے اعتدال اور ہمہ وقتی افادیت کے پیشِ نظر یہ ہیئت تجویز کی ہے جو کسی خاص وقت کے ساتھ خاص نہیں اور حد سے زیادہ بھی نہیں۔ البتہ موزے اور جرابیں پہننے سے اگر ٹخنے ڈھک جائیں تو کوئی حرج نہیں ہے۔
بعض علماء کرام فرماتے ہیں کہ ٹخنوں سے نیچے تہ بند، پاجامے یا شلوار جو تکبر کی نیت سے لٹکائی جائے باعثِ عذاب ہوگی اور جو اترانے یا تکبر کی نیت سے نہ ہو تو یہ بھی مکروہ ہے، کیونکہ ٹخنوں سے نیچے کپڑے کا لٹکانا بروئے شرع چونکہ خطرے سے خالی نہیں ہے اور اس پر دوزخ کی وعیدیں آئی ہیں، اس لیے بہر حال ہر قسم کا لباس ٹخنوں سے اوپر ہی رہنا اچھا ہے، بطورِ احتیاط ٹخنے ضرور ننگے رہنے چاہئیں، تکبر کی نیت سے لٹکانا تو حضور اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ارشاد کے مطابق باعثِ عذاب ہے ہی اور بغیر تکبر کے لٹکانا اہلِ دوزخ سے مشابہت کرنا ہے جو کہ کسی صورت میں ایک مومن کے لیے گوارا نہیں ہو سکتا۔
ایک روایت کے مطابق حضور اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ایک دن ایک شخص کو اس حال میں نماز پڑھتے دیکھا کہ اس کے پاجامے ٹخنوں سے نیچے تھے تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اس کو دوبارہ وضو کرنے اور نماز لوٹانے کا حکم دیا۔ (الحدیث)

English translation
Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whatever part of the ankles remains below the lower garment will be in the Fire.” (Bukhari)
That is, whatever length of cloth hangs below the ankles, that portion will be cast into Hell. It should be clear that letting the garment hang below the ankles was the practice of the arrogant in the Age of Ignorance, and in Islam the punishment for arrogance is fixed as Hell. Therefore, because letting the garment hang below the ankles is a mark of arrogance, it has been declared forbidden and a cause of the Fire.
Under the sway of present-day fashion this evil has spread very widely among us; people keep their pyjamas, shalwars and the like below the ankles and needlessly invite punishment, although it is no difficult matter for a person to keep his shalwar, pyjama or trousers above the ankle. With a little thought and a little care this can be done.
In another narration it comes thus: whoever, out of pride and arrogance, lets his lower garment — that is, his pyjama, waist-wrapper or any other cloth — hang below the ankles, Allah will not look upon him with the eye of mercy on the Day of Resurrection. (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim.)
Because letting the garment hang below the ankles has been described as a mark of pride, and this is the way of the arrogant, and arrogance too leads to Hell — for this reason Allah will not cast even a glance of grace upon such servants on the Day of Resurrection. Here the looking with mercy is negated; rather Allah will look upon such servants with wrath and anger. So one should make it a habit that the garment is never below the ankles.
Outwardly this seems a very trivial matter, but by nature its effect on a person is very deep. Islam wishes to see Muslim men hardy and brisk; affected airs and being loose and slovenly are not good qualities for a man. For this reason the Sharia also forbade men to wear silken clothing, and likewise in the manner of dress it has prescribed a way by which, unconsciously and naturally, a person stays brisk and ever alert for deeds of striving.
Among non-Muslim nations too, dress is shortened when necessary for briskness and agility — thus shorts are in vogue for the time of games and sport, while in ordinary circumstances dress reaching below the ankles is common. But the Islamic Sharia, in view of moderation and constant usefulness, has prescribed this form, which is neither confined to any particular time nor excessive. However, if the ankles are covered by wearing socks and stockings, there is no harm.
Some scholars say that a waist-wrapper, pyjama or shalwar let down below the ankles with the intention of arrogance will be a cause of punishment, and that which is not out of vanity or arrogance is also disliked (makruh), because from the standpoint of the Sharia the hanging of cloth below the ankles is not free of danger and warnings of Hell have come regarding it. Therefore in every case it is better for every kind of garment to remain above the ankles; as a precaution the ankles should certainly be left bare. To let it hang with the intention of arrogance is, according to the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, a cause of punishment, and to let it hang even without arrogance is to resemble the people of Hell — which in no case can be acceptable for a believer.
According to one narration, the Prophet ﷺ one day saw a man praying in a state in which his pyjamas were below the ankles, so he ﷺ ordered him to perform ablution again and to repeat the prayer. (al-Hadith)
