English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: “I served the Messenger of Allah for ten years, and he never once said ‘Uff’ to me, nor ever said, ‘Why did you do this?’ nor ever said, ‘Why did you not do that?’”
(Bukhari and Muslim)

For any human character to become a model to be followed, it is necessary that all parts of its life be before our eyes—that no event be lost in the veil of secrecy and the darkness of ignorance, but rather that all its biography and circumstances be before the world like the bright day, so that it may be known to what extent that character has the capacity to be an ideal life for human society. If, by this standard, we cast a glance over the biography and life of any personality in history, it will become clear that, apart from the Seal of the Prophets, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa, no other being measures up to this standard.
Every moment of the life of the Seal of the Prophets, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa, from birth to death, is before people, and no brief period of his life passed that was hidden from view. His birth, infancy, childhood, coming to awareness and discernment, youth, trade, comings and goings, marriage, and every moment before and after prophethood is before everyone like the bright day. Rising, sitting, sleeping, waking, marriage, children, friends, enemies, prayer, fasting, worship by day and night, peace and war, travel and residence, bathing and washing, eating and drinking, laughing and weeping, dressing and covering, walking and moving about, speaking and conversing, jest and humour, solitude and company, mixing with people, his manner and way, complexion and scent, features, stature—even his domestic relations and matters of cleansing and purification—everything is recorded, known and preserved in full light. No moment of the life of the Seal of the Prophets, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa, is behind a veil. That is why Allah the Exalted has said:
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah there is for you an excellent example, for everyone who hopes in Allah and the Last Day.” (al-Ahzab 21)
Someone has aptly said that Muhammad is the first person who was born in the light of the sun. The meaning is that, just as a thing is clear and distinct in the light of the sun, so too the life of our Prophet is clear and luminous.
Inside the home the Prophet was among the gathering of his wives and children, and outside the home in the assembly of devotees and friends. The Prophet gave his pure wives this general permission: “Whatever you see in me in private, declare it openly to everyone in public; whatever you see in the darkness of night, reveal it in the light of day; whatever you see in closed chambers, proclaim it aloud from the open rooftops.” Can an example of such moral confidence and trust be found anywhere else? Whether the Prophet was in private or in public, in the mosque or on the field of jihad, engaged in the night prayer or in ordering his troops, upon the pulpit or in a corner of solitude, at all times and to every person the command was that whatever his state and condition might be, all of it should be brought into the open—because Allah, the Lord of Honour, has declared:
“And (Muhammad) does not speak from his own desire; it is but a command of God that is sent (to him).” (al-Najm 3, 4)
Even on occasions of jest and good humour, nothing but the truth came from the blessed tongue of the Prophet. (On the authority of Tirmidhi.) Likewise, even in a state of anger the Prophet had such control over his emotions that no word contrary to fact ever came from his tongue. (On the authority of Abu Dawud.)
From this blessed hadith it becomes clearly known, regarding the beautiful example (uswa hasana) of the Prophet, how lofty his character was—that even to his servant, who was appointed solely to carry out his tasks, over so long a period he never so much as said “Uff,” let alone scolded or rebuked him, nor ever asked why he had done or not done a thing. Can history speak of any personality who could measure up merely to this standard of the Prophet’s noble character? Only such a person could do so who is enriched with the wealth of a tranquil heart.
