English translation
Hazrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: “It never happened that anyone asked the Holy Prophet for something and he refused it.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)

The character of Muhammad is a perfect model for all mankind. There is comprehensiveness in the life of the Prophet of Islam; therefore, for the human race, the life of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, is a model of guidance and a means of salvation. In Islam there are two things: the Book and the Sunnah—by “the Book” is meant the Glorious Qur’an, and by “the Sunnah” is meant the ahadith.
A Jew once said sarcastically to a Companion, “Your Prophet teaches you everything and instructs you even in the most trivial matters.” At this the Companion said proudly, “Yes, our Prophet teaches us everything, even the etiquette of cleaning oneself after relieving nature and of ablution.” And to this day the life of this perfect teaching is presented with pride before the world. It is as though the life of Muhammad is the mirror-house of the world, looking into which every person reforms and corrects his body and soul, his outward and inward, his word and deed, his tongue and heart, his manners and customs, his ways and methods. This is why no Muslim nation seeks anything for its refinement, manners and morals from outside its religion or apart from the life of its Messenger, nor has it any need to.
Such a perfect and comprehensive being—who in his own life provides examples and precedents of guidance for every kind and every sort, every group and every class of humanity; who out of his life’s examples grants us benefit in wrath and forbearance, generosity and destitution, courage and bravery, and tenderness of heart and compassion, for both religion and the world; who gives glad tidings of the kingdom of this world, the kingdom of heaven, and the kingdom of this world together with the kingdom of heaven—and who put into practice in his own life the rules, laws and code of conduct of both kingdoms.
Why is the Prophet of Islam the most perfect of all human beings? Because there appear in him, at one and the same time, such contradictory and varied qualities as history has never seen combined in any single person; these qualities were never combined in anyone, nor can they be. A king such that a whole country was in his fist, yet so helpless that he did not even reckon himself to be in his own possession but in the possession of Allah; so wealthy that treasure upon treasure came to him laden upon camels, yet so needy that for months no fire was lit in his house and time after time he passed through fasts of hunger; a commander who, with a handful of unarmoured men, waged victorious battle against thousands of armoured troops, yet so peace-loving that, despite the company of thousands of ardent, self-sacrificing devotees, he set his signature to the document of peace without the least demur; so brave and valiant that he stood utterly alone against thousands, yet so tender-hearted that he never shed a single drop of human blood with his own hand; so full of care that he was concerned for every particle of Arabia, concerned for his wife and children, concerned for the poor and destitute Muslims, concerned for the reform of God’s neglectful world—in short, concerned for the whole universe—yet so detached that he remembered none but his Allah, and everything besides Him was forgotten by him. He never took revenge on those who reviled him, and he prayed for the good of his personal enemies and wished them well; but the enemies of God he never forgave, and those who blocked the path of truth he always warned of Hell and the punishment of God. At the very moment when he appears as a sword-wielding soldier, he manifests himself in the form of an ascetic who keeps vigil through the night; at the very moment when he appears to us as a conqueror, he comes before us with prophetic innocence; at the very moment when we wish to call him the King of Arabia, he appears as a dervish seated upon a coarse mat, leaning on a pillow of palm-bark; at the very moment when the captives of the wars are being sent as slave-girls and slaves into the houses of the Muslims, Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, goes and shows her father the blisters on her hands and the marks on her chest which had formed from grinding at the mill and from filling the water-skin; at the very moment when half of Arabia is under his signet, Hazrat Umar comes into his presence and, lifting his gaze, surveys the furnishings of the abode of prophethood: the Prophet is resting upon a coarse mat, its marks imprinted upon his blessed body; on one side a handful of barley is placed, on one side a dry water-skin hangs. Seeing the entire worldly estate of the house of the Master of the Universe, Hazrat Umar weeps. The cause is asked, and he says, “O Messenger of Allah! What greater occasion for weeping could there be than this? Caesar and Chosroes are revelling amid gardens and springtime, while you, being a prophet, are in this condition.” He replied, “Umar! Are you not content that Caesar and Chosroes should take the pleasures of this world, and we the bliss of the Hereafter?”
