English translation
Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him (to the region of Yemen), he said: "You are going to a people who are People of the Book. So (first of all) call them to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If they accept this, then tell them that Allah has made five prayers obligatory upon them in the day and the night. If they accept that too, then tell them that Allah has made zakat obligatory upon them, to be taken from their wealthy and distributed among their poor. If they accept this, then (when collecting the zakat) avoid taking the choicest of their wealth, and beware of the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between his supplication and Allah" (meaning it is accepted at once and is not rejected). (Bukhari and Muslim)
In this hadith the Master of both worlds (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined several things: that first the People of the Book, the disbelievers and the polytheists be invited to accept Islam, and if they enter Islam they should be taught to establish the prayer, then to pay zakat, and then be taught the other rulings and obligations — and that injustice be avoided in the collection of zakat.
One must guard against the supplication of the oppressed, because nothing stands as a barrier between the oppressed one's supplication and Allah; the supplication of the oppressed is accepted, even if the oppressed person is a disbeliever and disobedient to Allah — that is, the matter of his sin and immorality is between him and Allah, but wronging him will not prevent his supplication from being answered, if he is truly wronged and injustice has been committed against him. Therefore one must not wrong anyone at all, not even disbelievers.
A Muslim's way should be one of sympathy, brotherhood and cooperation with everyone, not of oppression and injustice; the boat of oppression sinks only by drowning others. So to misuse one's authority to oppress someone, or to cause anyone mental or physical harm — whether by one's tongue or by any of one's deeds — these are acts whose doer should be ready to answer for them in the court of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted.
