English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O people! Allah is pure and accepts only that which is pure. And the command He gave to His Messengers in this regard is the very same He gave to all His believing servants. To the Messengers He said: 'O Messengers, eat of the pure and lawful food, and do righteous deeds.' And addressing the believers He said: 'O you who believe, eat of the lawful and good things from the provision We have given you (and avoid the unlawful).' " Then the Prophet ﷺ mentioned a man who, after a long journey (to some sacred place), arrives in such a state that his hair is dishevelled and his body and clothes are covered in dust, and he stretches his hands to the sky again and again, praying: 'O my Lord! O my Lord!' — yet his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he has been nourished on unlawful food. So how can this man's supplication be answered?"
In this blessed hadith the Prophet ﷺ first stated that Allah is pure and holy and accepts only that charity, alms and offering which is from purely lawful and clean wealth. The command to avoid the unlawful and to use only the lawful is that command of Allah which He gave to His chosen Messengers, and the same command He also gave to all the believers. So every believer should feel the greatness and importance of this command of Allah and always act upon it. The Prophet ﷺ then said that a man who, from head to foot, has become like an ascetic and a pitiable pauper, reaches some most sacred place and supplicates before Allah — while his food, drink and clothing are all from unlawful wealth — then, because of the vileness and ill fortune of that unlawful wealth, that journey of his and his supplication will not be accepted before Allah. For the believers there is a severe warning in this hadith. This world is but a perishing lodging, and its reality is nothing compared to the Hereafter; so those who, for the sake of comfort and enjoyment in this perishing world, sell their conscience — who perform acts of worship yet make no distinction between the lawful and the unlawful in their business, livelihood and dealings, and nourish both themselves and their households on unlawful wealth — let such people know that a body nourished on unlawful wealth deserves the Fire.
