میت کے ساتھ جانے والی چیزیں

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Three things follow the deceased [to the grave]: his family, his wealth (his servants and attendants), and his deeds. Then two of them return and one remains with him: his family and his wealth return, and his deeds remain with him." (Bukhari and Muslim)

In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has clearly pointed to a reality of which the Ummah is generally heedless, although it is a reality that not even any disbeliever or atheist denies — namely, death. This world is in truth like an inn for man, and one day he must set out from here on his eternal journey, where he will have to answer for each and every one of his deeds; that is, he will be recompensed there for every evil and every good deed, just as Allah Most High has said in the Qur'an:

"So whoever has done an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever has done an atom's weight of evil will see it." (Az-Zalzalah: 7, 8)

After death, all the wealth, possessions, and children that a person amassed remain behind in this world, and only a person's righteous deeds avail him, as Allah Most High has said:

"Wealth and children are but the adornment of the life of this world; but the enduring good deeds are better in reward with your Lord and better in hope." (Al-Kahf: 46)

So a person should do as many such deeds as possible that will stay with him and accompany him even into the grave — where everyone else abandons him and he is left alone in the solitude of the grave. These are the righteous deeds, which remain with a person in the grave and become his support and means of salvation amid his difficulties and loneliness. May Allah Most High grant all of us Muslims the ability to perform, in this world — which serves as a place of testing for the Hereafter — those deeds that will accompany us into the grave and the Hereafter (Ameen).
