It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (one day, addressing us): “Who will learn these few things from me and then act upon them himself, or teach them to others who will act upon them?” I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I am here!” So the Prophet ﷺ, out of affection, took my hand in his blessed hand and counted off these five things. The first thing he said was: “Guard against the things Allah has forbidden and shun them completely; if you do so, you will be among the greatest of worshippers.” The second thing he said was: “Be content and satisfied with what Allah has decreed for you; if you do so, you will become among the most self-sufficient and wealthy of people.” The third thing he said was: “Treat your neighbour well; if you do so, you will become a perfect believer.” The fourth thing he said was: “Love and desire for others what you love and desire for yourself; if you do so, you will become a true and complete Muslim.” And the fifth thing he said was: “Do not laugh too much, for excessive laughter deadens the heart.”

The most important lesson we learn from this hadith is that a person who learns matters of the religion has two duties: first, to act upon them himself, and second, to convey them to others — and even if he does not fully act upon them himself, he should still not hold back from telling others.

The matters the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught in this hadith are great and important truths. If, by Allah’s enabling, His servants are granted the ability to act upon these five things, they will begin to taste Paradise in this very world: their life will be pure and full of deep contentment, people near and far will love them, their heart will be alive and flourishing with the remembrance of Allah, and as for the pleasure of Allah and the blessings of Paradise they will receive in the Hereafter, their true worth and real sweetness will only be known once one arrives there.
