English translation
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who takes and consumes interest (riba), the one who pays it, the one who writes the contract of interest, and its witnesses,” and he ﷺ said, “they are all equal (in the sin).”
Islam is a perfect and complete religion whose rulings concern every sphere of life, including the economy. Islam neither grants complete freedom in economic affairs — leaving a person unrestrained in pursuit of his personal profit — nor does it consider such restriction lawful as would kill a person’s very motive for personal gain. Rather, in this economic sphere too Islam has imposed certain restrictions on account of which a person is neither wholly free in the pursuit of profit nor wholly restricted. One of these restrictions, which the Qur’an and Sunnah have clearly enjoined again and again, is the prohibition of interest (riba).
“Those who consume interest will not stand on the Day of Resurrection except as one stands who has lost his senses through Satan’s touch. That is because they say, ‘Trade is just like interest,’ whereas Allah has permitted trade and forbidden interest. So whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists shall have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah; but whoever returns to it — those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein forever.” (Al-Baqarah: 275)
The prohibition by which the religion of Islam has declared interest unlawful applies to every kind of interest-based dealing — whether it is interest on a loan or interest of excess, whether the interest increases wealth or diminishes it, whether the interest brings a small gain or a large one.
Because of such interest-based dealings there is no mutual cooperation among the members of society, which destroys the morals of society; and in such a society, instead of sacrifice, self-devotion, altruism and love, the disease of selfishness and of preferring one’s own gain over others becomes widespread. Society splits into two conflicting classes: one class who, on the strength of their wealth and money, rule over and lord it over people, and another class of the weak and helpless poor whose hard-earned income is unjustly devoured.
For these very reasons Islam has declared interest unlawful and counted it among the major sins. In this blessed hadith too this reality is pointed to: that interest-based business is so vile and accursed that to take it, to consume it, or to take part in it in any way is a cause of the curse of Allah. On this basis the one who pays interest, the one who writes the contract of interest, and its witnesses too share in the curse. Therefore, whoever wishes to be saved from the curse of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and from their wrath should keep himself far from this business.
