English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If I were to command anyone to prostrate to any created being, I would command the wife to prostrate to her husband.”

The guidance the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave regarding the mutual rights and responsibilities of husband and wife has as its special purpose that this relationship be as pleasant and joyful as possible for both parties — that their hearts remain joined, that the aims for which this bond is established be fulfilled in the best way, and that the continuation of the human race carry on with dignity and honour, which is the will of the Creator of this world.

In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that if it were permissible in this world to prostrate to anyone, he would command the wife to prostrate to her husband, because Allah has made the husband (the man) the guardian and the one in authority. “Men are the maintainers and authorities over women.” (An-Nisa: 34)

Every authority and dominion in this world is only for a fixed term; the one who was a ruler yesterday is a captive today, and those who were his subjects yesterday will not give him a farthing’s regard today. These authorities and governments are things that come and go, but the bond between husband and wife is a lifelong bond — breath by breath, the companionship of every single moment; from the moment this “authority” is established it lasts until death. Every other authority is merely a relationship of rule and regulation, whereas the bond of husband and wife, in which Allah has made the husband the one in authority, is not a merely formal or perfunctory relationship — it is a joining of hearts whose effects encompass the whole of life. In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has drawn the woman’s attention to her duties: that after obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, the person most worthy of your respect and most deserving of your obedience is your husband.

Women bear no other worldly responsibility except this: that they keep to the home, obey their husband, and rightly raise the children — through which they build the nation and are called the builders of the nation and community. This is the station granted to women by the last Prophet of the age ﷺ. Now women may either take up this station of honour, or, if they wish, turn away from it and take the path of disgrace.
