English translation
Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him) says that (once) the Messenger of Allah ṣalla’llahu ʿalayhi wa-sallam said to me: “Abu al-Mundhir! (this is the kunya of Ubayy ibn Ka‘b) Do you know which verse of the Book of Allah is, in your view, the greatest?” I said: “Allah and His Messenger know best (which verse it is).” The Prophet ṣalla’llahu ʿalayhi wa-sallam asked (again): “Abu al-Mundhir! Do you know which verse of the Book of Allah is, in your view, the greatest?” I said: “Allahu la ilaha illa huwa’l-hayyu’l-qayyum” (that is, the whole Ayat al-Kursi). Ubayy ibn Ka‘b says that (hearing this) the Prophet ṣalla’llahu ʿalayhi wa-sallam struck his blessed hand upon my chest (as though commending this answer) and said: “Abu al-Mundhir! May knowledge be blessed for you (that is, by the blessing of this knowledge you have come to know the greatest verse of the Qur’an).” (Muslim)
The immense excellence of Ayat al-Kursi is established by sound hadiths, as in this hadith too it is declared the greatest verse of the Holy Qur’an. Reciting it gives protection from Shaytan at night, there is great merit in reciting it after every obligatory prayer, and so on. Since this noble verse contains mention of the Kursi (Throne), both the common people and the learned know and recognise it by the name Ayat al-Kursi; even in the narrations of hadith it is mentioned by the name Ayat al-Kursi. This verse is verse number 255 of Surat al-Baqara. It is a most comprehensive verse based on the attributes of Allah’s majesty, the loftiness of His station, and His power and greatness. In it the Oneness of Allah — in His essence and attributes — is set forth in a wondrous manner: that Allah, exalted is His station, exists, is Living, is All-Hearing and All-Seeing, is the Sovereign, is the Necessarily Existent, is Everlasting and Abiding, is the Originator and Creator of all creation, is beyond all change and being affected, is the Possessor of majesty and glory such that none may speak before Him without His leave, is the Owner of such perfect power that creating the whole universe and all its creation, sustaining it, and maintaining its firm order causes Him neither fatigue nor lassitude, and is the Owner of an all-encompassing knowledge from which no thing — open or hidden, no atom or drop — remains outside.
The answer that Ubayy ibn Ka‘b gave to the Messenger of Allah’s question was a general practice of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all). There, in particular, the reason was that possibly the Prophet ṣalla’llahu ʿalayhi wa-sallam wished to state some new heavenly command distinct from previous knowledge; and so the Companions would give this same answer even to questions about ordinary, everyday matters. But apart from this, even in ordinary circumstances, to display one’s knowledge before a great man of learning is somewhat contrary to good manners; expressing one’s own lack of knowledge before him opens the door to benefiting from his treasury of knowledge.
But when the Prophet ṣalla’llahu ʿalayhi wa-sallam asked the same question a second time, Ubayy ibn Ka‘b understood that the Prophet’s aim was precisely to know his knowledge and to gauge his opinion, so he gave the answer. In this way he combined, in a most subtle manner, both courtesy and obedience — which is the way of people of perfection.
The Prophet ṣalla’llahu ʿalayhi wa-sallam commended him because Ubayy ibn Ka‘b had said this on the basis of his own reflection and judgement, which means that his insight into the meaning and purport of the Holy Qur’an was very deep, and he gauged the greatness and importance of this verse from its very content — which was entirely correct. The Prophet’s saying “May knowledge be blessed for you” means: may this knowledge be beneficial to you and a cause of honour and elevation. By this knowledge is meant the knowledge of the Qur’an and the hadith, which is certainly a cause of success in this world and the next.
