English translation
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “There are three signs of a hypocrite: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust.”
Whenever some reform movement begins to advance at a revolutionary pace and its sway spreads over society, then between its adherents and its opponents a third class also comes into being. That is, on the one hand there are people who become the movement's complete companions and enter within its sphere of influence and obedience with total mental and physical attachment; opposing them stands a second class, the opponents, who openly oppose the movement and, with all their strength and all their resources, publicly remain ranged against the movement's callers and supporters. And between these two a third class arises, made up of those who neither become the movement's supporters at heart nor openly oppose it. Such people keep their mental and emotional attachment with their former beliefs and ideas, yet physically they join the ranks of the movement's supporters. This same situation confronted Islam as well. After the Makkan life of the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him), when the Madinan life began and the environment of the call to Islam became different, and the call of the religion kept advancing successfully, and the number of adherents and companions rapidly increased, and strength and might too began to grow, and socially the people of Islam began to gain ascendancy, the opponents of Islam had to change the form of their enmity. They adopted this fixed policy: outwardly become those who bear the name of Islam and begin to live with the Muslims, but inwardly remain the companions of the opponents of Islam, that is, of the disbelievers, and, through secret and treacherous dealings, keep laying thorns in the path of the call to Islam. Thus it is from here that the foundation of hypocrisy is laid, and such people are called hypocrites in Islam. There is no doubt that, just as hypocrisy proves the hardest obstacle for any call, so too in the case of Islam this class of hypocrites proved the most harmful. In the beginning the ugly face of these hypocrites remained hidden from the Muslims, but when their hypocritical policy and cunning activities began to cause greater harm to Islam and the Muslims, and their movement and activity against Islam became known, their identities began to come to the fore; and then this class came to be felt to be of such importance that in their name an entire surah, “Al-Munafiqun,” was revealed. Besides this too, at many places the Muslims have been warned about the hypocrites and their conspiracies and destructive schemes.
Just as faith and disbelief have various kinds and forms, so too hypocrisy has several kinds. One is doctrinal hypocrisy, and this is the real hypocrisy — that is, outwardly claiming to hold belief in the oneness of Allah, in messengership, in the angels, and in the resurrection and gathering, while inwardly completely denying and deviating from all these beliefs. This is the very hypocrisy that existed in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Qur'an has also called this hypocrisy disbelief, and it is about this hypocrisy that the warning has come that in Hell the abode of the hypocrites will be even below that of the disbelievers. Then it happened that the habits and customary ways which these hypocrites used to practise were also given the label of hypocrisy — because most of them are the very things that make man's moral and practical life defective, things that, being clearly contrary to the teachings of Islam, to lofty human values, and to trust and honesty, do not accord in the least with faith and Islam. So when a period of decline came in the religious life of the Muslims and they began to adopt those things that were characteristic of the hypocrites of Islam, the reformers determined another kind of hypocrisy and named it practical hypocrisy. In today's age too we are witnessing very well the practical form of this hypocrisy, in that people outwardly call themselves Muslims while inwardly, in league with the disbelievers, they are at war against the Muslims. In this blessed hadith, what is meant by the thing that is intended to be warned against is this very practical hypocrisy. That is to say, adopting falsehood in speech, not fulfilling a promise, and betraying trusts are among those evil habits which are indeed found in a hypocrite but whose presence in a believer is nothing short of astonishing. Therefore, if a Muslim, knowingly or unknowingly, is afflicted with any of these evil habits, he should immediately take himself to account and rid himself of that evil habit; otherwise he will have to suffer severe punishment in the Hereafter.
