English translation
Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: "Whoever is deprived of gentleness (soft-heartedness) is deprived of all good."
In building character and conduct, gentleness holds a fundamental importance. The source of most of a person's goodness and virtues is the softness and tenderness of his temperament; therefore, to be deprived of gentleness is tantamount to keeping one's lap empty of every kind of goodness and benefit.
If we reflect on the social dimension: if a person has no element of gentleness within him, he will fail to treat the weak, the frail, the poor and those under his authority in the way they deserve. Only that person can fulfil the hopes of the helpless and the destitute who has been given a compassionate heart, who feels the pain and needs of others, and whose feeling is such that it makes him restless. Those with sensitive hearts have very keen ears; they hear even those cries that lie suppressed in the hearts of the helpless and never reach their tongues, and they perceive the state of helplessness and destitution that befalls a poor, needy and destitute person. To behave gently with the weak and frail and to help them is our duty. Likewise, those who are under our authority should not be burdened with more than they can bear, and the effort should be to give them even more than their due, to treat them with humanity, not to wound their self-respect and honour, to encourage them, and if some things in them are capable of reform, to try wisely to reform them too. In nobility, gentleness and compassion there is such power that through it even hearts harder than stone can be softened; but this requires great patience and forbearance. It is necessary that we be aware of this secret: that the thing of real honour for a person is that within him there be the substance of patience, forbearance, gentleness and sympathy, and that he find comfort in giving comfort to hearts. These are the things that raise a person high in the sight of Allah. A person's pride fades away, but the imprints of good character are such that they can never be erased. People know the pleasure of eating and drinking, but the pleasure that Allah has placed in righteousness and beauty of character is a pleasure found nowhere else.
Regarding gentleness, another narration comes to this effect: that when Allah intends to grant gentleness to the people of a household, He necessarily benefits them through it; and on the contrary, the household whose people He deprives of gentleness, He necessarily causes them harm thereby. (Bayhaqi)
If the quality of gentleness is found among the members of a household, it is a thing of great good and blessing; because of it the home becomes like Paradise, and a pleasant atmosphere is created in it. Every member of the home will be a well-wisher of the other. By contrast, if harshness instead of gentleness is found among the members of a household, the inevitable result will be that the people of the home will always be caught in a kind of torment, the atmosphere of the home will become gloomy, a state of tension will prevail in minds, and among the people of the home feelings of envy and ill-will will arise instead of love for one another, and the peace of the home will be ruined. The losses that will have to be borne on account of this in the life of the Hereafter are a separate matter.
When feelings of mercy, compassion, kindness and gentleness arise within us, and we recognise the worth and value of these feelings, and instead of suppressing them we come to the aid of the weak, the helpless and the needy, then in reality at that moment we are being blessed by the exalted Being of Allah, who is the real source and fountainhead of mercy, compassion and kindness. Wherever, in whatever form, signs of mercy are found, they are a part of His mercy. Whoever's connection with Allah becomes established, Allah bestows His grace and favour upon him, turns towards him completely, and showers His bounty upon him, to the point that He admits him into Paradise, which is the perfect manifestation of Allah's grace, favour and beneficence. Therefore, whoever does not have a quality like gentleness within him should strive to acquire it, because a person deprived of this quality is deprived of all good.
