English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that one day some Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “We find in our hearts certain things (that is, whisperings) which we consider it wrong even to bring onto our tongues.” The Master of both worlds (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “Do you really find this?” (that is, does your heart dislike that such a thing be brought onto the tongue). The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: “Yes indeed!” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “That is manifest faith.”

Waswasah is the term for that thought relating to sin or disbelief which passes through the heart, or which Satan casts into the heart and mind. As against it, ilham is the term for that good and righteous thought which is cast into the heart and mind from Allah Almighty. Whisperings take various forms and kinds. One kind of it is involuntary and the other voluntary. Involuntary is when the thought of some sin, or of something contrary to faith and conviction, passes suddenly and uncontrollably through the heart and mind. For a whispering of this sort there is no accountability. However, if that same bad thought settles in the heart and mind and keeps causing continual agitation, and the disposition also desires to act upon it, and a kind of pleasure and attachment is also felt from it, then this is a voluntary whispering. But for the ummah of Muhammad this whispering is pardoned, and there is no sin upon it so long as it does not take a practical form. Indeed, even if the intention to act arises and one then holds oneself back from the act, a good deed is written in its place. This is because the noble saying of the Master of both worlds (peace and blessings be upon him) is: Allah Almighty has pardoned for the people of my ummah those whisperings that arise in their hearts, so long as they do not act upon those whisperings and do not bring them onto their tongues (Bukhari and Muslim).

Satan is the greatest enemy of a person's spiritual progress. His fundamental aim is precisely to remain engaged in misleading and leading astray the servants of Allah who have faith and conviction in the being and attributes of Allah. It is not only that through deception he tries to create obstacles in a person's righteous deeds and good works; rather, through the casting of whisperings he also tries to create doubts of various kinds, and evil too, in the world of a person's thinking, reflection and ideas. Prayer is that most important act of worship in which Satan expends his effort the most to lead astray the righteous servants of Allah. It is his very sabotage that keeps ordinary people deprived of complete concentration during prayer, the result of which is that as soon as the intention for prayer is made, thoughts of the whole world begin to gather in the heart and mind, and those matters that never otherwise come to mind mount an assault upon the mind during prayer — so much so that a person forgets how many rak'ahs he has prayed. Sometimes the thought passes that perhaps he did not recite al-Hamd; and sometimes the thought passes that he does not know whether he performed the bowing or not.

For all such occasions, the sum of the guidance that the Master of both worlds (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to the members of his ummah is that a person should pay no attention to such thoughts, should complete his prayer, and should say to Satan: yes, I am making mistakes, my prayer is not being performed correctly, but I will pray it nonetheless and I will not act upon what you say. In the view of the learned scholars this method is very beneficial for remaining safe from satanic influences. This is because in this way Satan despairs of the one praying, and when he realises that this person is not going to come into his grasp, he moves away from him.

The learned scholars have also written that one immediate and effective way of blocking the path of whisperings is to change one's setting. That is, one should at once move away from the place where one is sitting or lying, and go to another place and engage in some work; in this way the attention will shift immediately and the path of the whispering will be cut off. Remaining clean and in a state of ablution, and keeping the tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah, can also counter this weapon of Satan — because in this way a person comes under the influence of angelic forces and remains safe from satanic forces.
