English translation
Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever departs from this world in a state of sincerity towards Allah alone, who has no partner, and having established the prayer and given the zakat, departs from it while Allah is pleased with him."

The greatest longing of a believing servant, and the underlying reason for his constant striving after good deeds and his avoidance of evil while he lives in this world, is simply that Allah should somehow be pleased with him. And when a believer comes to know that Allah is pleased with him, no other desire remains for him beyond that. In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gave glad tidings to those people who are sincere for Allah — that is, who keep themselves pure and clean of every kind of association of partners with Allah and of ostentation — and who along with that uphold the prayer and the zakat: when such people depart from this world, Allah Most High too remains pleased with them. This is the greatest reward for their deeds, and it is the goal and the utmost perfection of every believer's life.

In one narration it comes in these words: "Allah does not look at your forms or at your wealth; rather He looks at your hearts and your deeds." (Reported by Muslim)

That is, the acceptance of anything in the court of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, depends upon sincerity of heart, soundness of the inner self, and beauty of character. Outward form and appearance, wealth and riches, are never the standard. Allah's pleasure, forgiveness and mercy are not decided on the basis of a person's face, figure, body, colour, lineage, appearance or wealth, but on goodness of intention, purity of heart, chastity and lofty qualities. However good and excellent a person's deed may look outwardly, if it is empty of the essence of sincerity and the intention is not sound, it is never acceptable in the court of Allah.

Sincerity is the spirit and the very life of all good deeds and noble character. Any work done with an eye to name and fame or to other worldly motives and impulses will not merely be devoid of acceptance in the court of Allah, but will be a cause of punishment. With Allah Most High, the acceptance of a thing and the reward for it depend purely on good deeds and on seeking the pleasure of Allah.

In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) mentioned, after sincerity, two important acts of worship: one is the bodily worship of prayer and the other the financial worship of zakat. In the Holy Qur'an the command to establish the prayer and to pay the zakat is given again and again. In twenty-seven (27) verses of the Holy Qur'an prayer and zakat are mentioned together, whereas no other act of worship is mentioned alongside the prayer in this way.

Like "the establishment of the prayer," Allah has made "the giving of zakat" a distinguishing mark and emblem of the people of faith, and has made the brotherhood of faith depend upon it. In Surah al-Tawbah it is said concerning the idolaters: "But if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the zakat, then leave their way free." (Al-Tawbah 9:5) Then a few verses later it is said: "If they repent and keep up prayer and go on paying zakat, they are your brothers in religion." (Al-Tawbah 9:11)

After the affirmation of the oneness of Allah and the messengership of the Prophet, prayer is the most important pillar of Islam and it is the right of Allah Most High. It contains various aspects of the worship of Allah: standing with folded hands, bowing and prostrating, supplication and intimate calling upon Allah, the acknowledgement of the greatness and majesty of Allah, Mighty and Glorious, and of one's own humility and helplessness. All these forms and kinds of worship belong to Allah alone. After prayer, the second important obligation is zakat, in which, alongside the aspect of worship, the rights of Allah's servants are also included. Through zakat the needy, the destitute, the poor, the disabled and the helpless of society benefit; and if this system of zakat were put into practice in its true sense, an extraordinary change could come about in the present state of degradation and backwardness.

May Allah Most High enrich all Muslims with the wealth of sincerity and grant them the ability to perform all acts of worship in accordance with the authentic Sunnah. Amin, O Lord of the Worlds!
