English translation
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace be upon him), who said: "The son of Adam has had his share of fornication decreed for him; he will inevitably attain it. The fornication of the eyes is the look; the fornication of the ears is listening; the fornication of the tongue is speech; the fornication of the hand is the seizing; and the fornication of the foot is the walking. The heart desires and longs, and thereafter the private part either confirms it or denies it."
Zina means a man establishing a physical relationship with a woman without marriage. In the eyes of the law, the term zina applies only to physical relations; but in the eyes of morality, every inclination towards the opposite sex outside the bounds of marriage is, in terms of intention and purpose, zina. To let the eye take pleasure in the beauty of a stranger; to let the ears delight in that person's voice; to let the tongue soften in conversation with them; to let the feet turn towards them again and again — all these are the preliminaries of zina and are themselves zina in a moral sense. The law does not catch this kind of zina; it is a thief of the heart, and only the heart's own watchman can arrest it. In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has informed us of all these factors, and in the Holy Qur'an heedless people have repeatedly been warned that no deed of theirs is hidden from Allah. Allah Most High says: "Surely the hearing, the sight and the heart — all of these shall be questioned about (how they were used)." (Bani Isra'il 17:36) In another place the Qur'an says: "And indeed your Lord is ever watchful (observing the deeds of every one)." (Al-Fajr 89:14) — that is, nothing is hidden from Him; He sees the deeds of all creation, and accordingly He gives punishment and reward in this world and in the Hereafter.
Looking, listening, walking towards something and the like are all causes of zina. But figuratively the term zina is applied to these motives and factors too, because they can become the cause and the means of actual fornication, so that a person may keep himself clear even of these causes. Therefore, if he is not careful, the private part will confirm it — that is, he will fall into immorality; and if he stays away from the causes of zina, the private part will deny it — that is, he will be preserved from immorality.
Among the factors that lead to zina, the trial of the gaze stands foremost. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Every evil eye (whether of a man or of a woman) is an adulterer. (Reported by Tirmidhi.) To look at any man or woman with desire is the fornication of the eyes. Watching obscene scenes with relish on television, VCR, in the cinema, on satellite dish and so on is likewise included in the fornication of the eyes. Listening with lustful feeling to the talk of one who is not a lawful relative, and taking delight in indecent talk and obscene songs, is the fornication of the ears — for often the tongue is silent while the sense of hearing is being stirred by other means. This too is connected with corruption of intention, and Islam forbids it as well. Allah Most High says: "And let them not strike their feet on the ground so as to make known the adornment that they hide (that is, their jewellery — so that its jingling may be heard)." (Al-Nur 24:31) To speak in an alluring way is the fornication of the tongue; that is, to speak on such a subject with one who is not a lawful relative, whether directly or through some medium, or to recite romantic verses and poems to them, is the fornication of the tongue. After the wandering eye, the tongue is one of the greatest instruments of Satan and the lower self. How many mischiefs there are that spread through the tongue! The Qur'an has blocked this path in these words: "If you fear Allah, then do not be soft in speech, lest one in whose heart there is (the disease of ill intent) should conceive hopes of you." (Al-Ahzab 33:32) To take hold of or touch one who is not a lawful relative is the fornication of the hand; to walk for such a purpose is the fornication of the feet; to give such a purpose a place in one's heart, to put it into practice, to make plans and lay schemes for it — all of these mentioned preliminaries are the forerunners of zina. In short, every part of the human body that touches the body of the opposite sex with an evil intention is an adulterer. The character of a believer is that he does not go near any cause or motive of immorality at all.
