English translation
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah has removed from you the arrogance of the Days of Ignorance and its boasting about forefathers. A man is either a God-fearing believer or a wretched sinner. All people are the children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust."
In the Days of Ignorance people were afflicted with racism. In their view superiority of race and lineage was the standard of nobility. This produced in them feelings of pride and arrogance which stood in the way of their reform. The Jews too were afflicted with the disease of racial superiority, which rendered them devoid of good works.
Islam declared this notion of ignorance to be false and made clear the truth that a person's goodness depends on his character. The standard of excellence is not race and lineage, but piety — that is, the fear of God. Indeed, in its comprehensiveness this word taqwa signifies regard and consideration for the sacred law in every smallest matter; and it is such a great quality that it produces all other praiseworthy attributes within a person. Whatever race a person may belong to, if faith and piety are within him he is the best of people; and if he is deprived of them, then there is no station of honour and dignity for him. Allah, Mighty and Glorious, says:
"O mankind! We created you all from a single (pair of) male and female (that is, Adam and Eve), and We made you into families and tribes so that you might come to know one another. Truly the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is the one who fears Him most." (Al-Hujurat 49:13)
In this Qur'anic verse Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, in the course of teaching human and Islamic rights and the manners of social life, has forbidden and prohibited certain things which become a cause of mutual hatred and enmity. Here there is a comprehensive teaching of human equality: that no person should regard another as lesser or base, and that no one should boast on the basis of his lineage and family or his wealth and riches — for these things are in reality nothing to boast of. Moreover, such boasting lays the foundation of mutual hatred and enmity. For this reason it was said that all human beings, being the children of one mother and father, are brothers to one another; and the differences of family and tribe, or of wealth and property, which Allah has placed among them are not for boasting and superiority but for recognition. For the wisdom in this is that the identification and recognition of people should be made easy — for instance, if two persons have the same name, they can be distinguished by the difference of family, and from this the near and distant relationships can be known. Its purpose is not to display superiority over one another, as, unfortunately, descent and lineage have been taken as the basis of superiority — even though Islam came and abolished this and described it as ignorance. But alas! Today even those who take the name of Islam, who call themselves Muslims and who make loud claims of following the Qur'an and the Sunnah are afflicted with this ugly disease of ignorance — whereas in the sight of Allah, Glorified and Exalted, the standard of superiority is not family, tribe, race or lineage, which lie outside any person's control at all; rather that standard is piety, the adoption of which lies within a person's will and choice.
And without doubt piety is the very foundation and root of the religion of Islam. It is a necessary demand of faith that a servant should take practical steps out of fear of his Lord. The more piety (the fear of Allah) grows within a person, the more rightly guided he becomes and the nearer he draws to Allah; and such people become the beloved and the friends of Allah. This matter has been stated in numerous places in the Wise Qur'an. In one place it comes thus:
"None are the friends of Allah but the people of piety." (Al-Anfal 8:34)
May Allah Most High, by His special favour, grant the Muslims the ability to avoid this evil of ignorance, which drives a person towards such blameworthy deeds as bigotry, pride and ostentation. Amin, O Lord of the Worlds!
