English translation
‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The two rak‘ahs of Fajr are better than the world and all that is in it.”
The real purpose and wisdom of performing the sunnah prayers is that they make good and complete whatever deficiency is left in the performance of the obligatory prayers. Among the sunnahs, some are mu’akkadah (emphasised) and some are ghayr mu’akkadah. The sunnah of Fajr is a sunnah mu’akkadah, and among all the emphasised sunnahs it has the greatest importance and merit. In this noble hadith the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that the two rak‘ahs of the Fajr sunnah are better than the world and all that is in it. The meaning is that the reward they will bring on the Day of Judgement will be more precious and more profitable than the world and everything in it, because everything of this world perishes while the reward of the Hereafter is everlasting. The true and complete unveiling — indeed the direct witnessing — of this reality will, God willing, come to us all in the Hereafter.
The importance and merit of these two sunnahs of Fajr can also be well judged from the following ahadith:
☆ Do not leave the two rak‘ahs of the Fajr sunnah even if horses are driving you on (that is, even if you are travelling and covering the stages swiftly on horseback, still do not leave the sunnahs of Fajr). (Reported by Abu Dawud)
While travelling, the obligatory prayer is shortened and the emphasis upon the other emphasised sunnahs falls away so that they become non-emphasised; but the sunnahs of Fajr have this importance and merit, that they remain emphasised on every occasion, in travel and at home.
☆ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not show as much care for any sunnah or optional prayer as he showed for the two rak‘ahs before Fajr. (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)
☆ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never omitted the four rak‘ahs before Zuhr and the two rak‘ahs before Fajr. (Reported by Bukhari)
☆ Whoever has not prayed the sunnahs of Fajr should pray them after sunrise. (Reported by Tirmidhi)
It should also be kept in view that in the sunnahs of Fajr the practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was to keep them short and the recitation light, as is well known from these ahadith:
☆ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to pray two short rak‘ahs between the adhan and the iqamah at the time of the morning prayer. (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)
☆ The Mother of the Believers, ‘A’ishah as-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), said that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) performed the two sunnahs of Fajr he made them so short and light that I would wonder (to myself) whether he had recited Surah al-Fatihah in those rak‘ahs or not. (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)
☆ The Mother of the Believers, Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), said that when the mu’adhdhin gave the adhan for the morning prayer and the dawn became clear, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would pray two light rak‘ahs. (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)
☆ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite Surah Qul ya ayyuha’l-kafirun and Surah Qul huwa’llahu ahad in the two rak‘ahs of the Fajr sunnah. (Reported by Muslim and Tirmidhi)
☆ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite in the two rak‘ahs of the Fajr sunnah this verse of Surah al-Baqarah: “Qulu amanna billahi … wa nahnu lahu muslimun” (verse 136), and this verse of Surah Aal-Imran: “Qul ya ahla’l-kitab … bi-anna muslimun” (verse 64). (Reported by Muslim)
