English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We are the last (to come), yet on the Day of Resurrection we will be the first; the only difference is that the earlier peoples were given the Book before us, and we were given it after them."
(Bukhari, Muslim and Nasa'i)
Allah granted the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ this distinction and excellence too: that his ﷺ mission (bi'that) is not for any particular place, or any particular era, or any particular time; rather his ﷺ prophethood is for the whole of creation — that is, for the Arabs and non-Arabs, and for jinn and mankind alike — and it is until the Day of Resurrection. That the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came as a Messenger for mankind and jinn — that is, for the whole of creation — is a shining proof that he ﷺ is the Prophet of all human beings and jinn who will come until the Day of Resurrection, and that after him ﷺ no prophet will come; that is, the chain of prophethood has been sealed with him ﷺ.
From this hadith it becomes clearly evident that his ﷺ messengership is the final messengership, and that the chain of revelation and prophethood was sealed with him ﷺ. Therefore, the religion of Islam that he ﷺ brought — Allah announced its completion too: "This day I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion." (Al-Ma'idah — 3)
It is evident that, after the completion of the religion, there remains no need for any prophet to come. Moreover, concerning the Qur'an that was revealed to him ﷺ, Allah announced: "It is We who have sent down the Reminder (the Qur'an), and it is We who are its Guardian." (Al-Hijr — 9)
In this declaration of Allah too there is a proof of the finality of prophethood; for the earlier heavenly scriptures that kept being revealed — since Allah had not promised to preserve them — did not remain safe from alteration (tahrif), and on that account the chain of revelation and prophethood continued, and upon each new prophet who came something new would be revealed, by which the earlier books would be abrogated, just as with the revelation of the Holy Qur'an all the earlier heavenly scriptures were abrogated. But since after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ no prophet — and after the Holy Qur'an no heavenly scripture — is to be revealed, Allah has taken the responsibility of preserving it upon Himself.
