English translation
Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Nothing is more beloved to Allah than two drops and two marks: (of the drops) a tear that trickles down from the fear of Allah, and a drop of blood that is shed in the way of Allah (jihad); and (of the marks) a mark received in the way of Allah (while fighting jihad), and a mark left behind in the performance of one of Allah's obligatory duties."
(Tirmidhi)
This blessed hadith shows us the importance and the reward of two of the most important duties in Islam: striving in the way of Allah (jihad), and the performance of worship even under harsh conditions for His sake. First mentioned are the two drops. One is the tear that flows from the awe and fear of Allah, however small its amount may be — in one hadith the believer is even given the glad tidings that a tear shed from the awe and fear of Allah which reaches his face will cause Allah to keep that face completely safe from the Fire of Hell. The second is the drop of blood that flows from a person's body in jihad. The second part of the hadith mentions the two marks. One is the mark left on a person's body while fighting in jihad — from the enemy's sword, a bullet, an arrow, or an injury from a fall, or from long service such as wielding weapons or carrying the equipment of the fighters, or from any other kind of service in jihad. The second is a mark left while performing an obligatory duty of Allah, such as the mark of ablution in bitter weather, or of prostration upon the forehead and ankles in prayer, or a mark from the journey of Hajj and the like.
From this hadith we learn how beloved to Allah is striving in His way, and the blood shed and the marks received in it — so beloved that, compared with them, nothing else is dear to Him. Conversely, when jihad becomes obligatory, failing to go out for it invites Allah's punishment:
"O you who believe! What is the matter with you that, when you are asked to march forth in the way of Allah, you cling heavily to the earth? Do you prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? (Know that) the enjoyment of worldly life is but little compared with the Hereafter. If you do not march forth (for jihad), He will punish you with a painful torment and will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all, for Allah is able to do all things." (At-Tawbah, 38–39)
So the believing servant should examine his deeds in order to keep Allah pleased, adopt the deeds that please Him, and repent from those evil deeds that invite Allah's punishment.
