English translation
Abu Musa al-Ashari (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that whenever the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم feared some people, he would recite this supplication: "O Allah, we place You before them and we seek refuge in You from their evil." (O Allah! We set You against them, and through You we seek refuge from their mischief.) (Abu Dawud and Nasai)
Supplication (dua) has a deep bond and connection with our lives. The person who wishes to order his life in accordance with the guidance of Allah, the Exalted, needs it at every moment; without the enabling grace and help of Allah he cannot take a single step of his life upon the path of truth, nor can he, without it, confront the devils and the [promptings of the] self and the jinn that ceaselessly expend their time and strength to turn him away from the truth.
A believer's most precious asset and strength is that spirit of obedience and servitude by whose support he remains firm-footed upon the path of truth and confronts every false power with fortitude. His endeavour is that, on the one hand, he should fulfil the demands of servitude in his life, observe the limits Allah has set, and keep his life pure of every kind of sin and disobedience to Allah; and on the other hand, with every breath, he should bind himself to the mantle of Allah's mercy and forgiveness — for Allah, the Exalted, has the power to hear the entreaties and supplications of His servants and change His decree, and to alter man's fate and destiny. This very reality is the message Allah, the Exalted, gives us in this verse of the Qur'an:
"Allah erases what He wills and confirms what He wills, and with Him is the Mother of the Book" (Ar-Rad 39).
A believer's faith should rest only upon the command of his Lord, Allah, the Exalted — for He alone is the Possessor of Majesty and Honour, He alone is the Ever-Living, His alone is the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and He alone, against enemies and oppressors, hears the supplications and cries of His close servants and, through His grace and bounty, suspends the punishment [decreed] — just as He turned away the punishment from the people of Yunus when they cried out before Allah and placed their trust in Him:
"In Allah we have placed our trust. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people" (Yunus 85).
Therefore, the fundamental demand of servitude is that, rather than looking only to outward means, man should cry out before Allah, the Exalted — for He alone hears and removes distress — as Allah, the Exalted, says: "And your Lord says: Call upon Me; I will answer your supplications" (Al-Mumin/Ghafir 60).
O Most Merciful of the merciful! Before You we confess our sins; we have wronged our own selves; our foreheads are in Your hand; Your every command is carried out upon us. If You do not have mercy upon us, we shall be among the losers. Surely Your mercy is vaster than our sins, and Your word is true — that Your mercy prevails over Your wrath. O Allah! We ask You for forgiveness of our sins, our faults, and our disobedience. O Allah! You alone are the Forgiver, and You love to forgive. O our Lord! There is none besides You to forgive our sins. O our Provider! We seek Your good pleasure. O Allah! We regard Your help as our means of deliverance. So turn back upon their own breasts the guile and deceit of these disbelievers and of the hypocrites who are the helpers of the disbelievers, and grant us Your aid. Amin!
