English translation
Ibn 'Abbas (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Two eyes will never be touched by the Fire of Hell: an eye that wept out of the fear of Allah, and an eye that spent the night on guard in the way of Allah." (Tirmidhi)
A great danger confronts every person — the danger of the punishment of Hell. How can this danger be averted? This is a fundamental question, and its answer is found in this hadith.
If a person reflects upon the afflictions that surround human life, he will have no difficulty in understanding that both comfort and hardship are entirely in the hand of Allah. Just as Allah provides comfort and ease for His servants, He also knows how to inflict punishment upon them. The limited comfort and ease seen here in this world has its perfect form in the Hereafter as Paradise, and the lesser forms of hardship and suffering we see in this world have their far greater form in the Hereafter as Hell. To escape the hardships of this world a person adopts various measures: to escape the heat he arranges shade and adorns his home with air-conditioning and fans, and to escape the cold he wears warm clothing and takes other steps. But what measure can there be to escape that far greater suffering which a person will face in Hell? The truth is that, apart from one measure, every other device is useless in this matter. That measure is to strive to attain the gaze of Allah's mercy and to seek His pleasure. For this, the hadith mentions two things.
The first is the fear of Allah, to which tear-filled eyes bear witness; the second is wakeful eyes that have carried out the duty of standing guard in the way of Allah (jihad). By Allah's glorious mercy, these two kinds of eyes will remain far from the flames of Hell. For a believer who keeps watch by night for the sake of Allah cannot be expected to be treacherous or irresponsible; likewise, a person who weeps out of the fear of Allah cannot be expected on the one hand to shed tears out of Allah's fear and on the other to trample the rights of Allah and of His servants. For this reason, the eye from which tears flow out of the fear of Allah, or the eye that stays awake in the path of Allah, can never deserve Hell.
In another hadith it is stated that a person whose eyes shed tears out of the fear of Allah will be given a place on the Day of Gathering, when there will be no shade except the shade of Allah's Throne. Likewise, to fight in the way of Allah for even a short while is better than standing near the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) in worship on Laylat al-Qadr.
This hadith urges us to make our lives upright in character, and to make our own deeds such that it becomes impossible for us to enter Hell alongside them.
