English translation
Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “(O people!) You will find the believers, in their showing mercy, love and affection, and kindness and support to one another, to be like a single body: when one limb of the body aches, the rest of the limbs call out to one another because of that one limb and share in its pain through sleeplessness and fever.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

In this saying of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), an indication is given to the believer's quality of unity and oneness: that if there is any feeling and bond that can rescue all the people of the world from distinctions of colour and race, differences of language and culture, and the divisiveness of lineage, tribe and region, and string them into a single thread of human brotherhood and unity, it is only the bond of faith and Islam. Thus, wherever the people of faith may be, to whatever colour and race they may belong, and however much their language and society may differ, as believers they are one and belong to one and the same brotherhood. Among them there is no human high or low, no hatred or contempt of superiority and inferiority. In the light of the creed they hold and the philosophy of life they believe in, they are well aware of the reality that all human beings are the children of one father. Therefore every Muslim bears towards his fellow Muslim brother the same bond and relationship as two real brothers: they hold in their hearts a feeling of mercy for one another, share in one another's pain and grief, help and assist one another, and when any believer is in distress they stand by him. How beautifully the poet has expressed this very quality:

In the company of friends, the believer is soft as silk;
but in the battle of truth against falsehood, the believer is (hard as) steel.

This reality of the believer the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) expressed in this blessed hadith, likening all Muslims to a single body: just as when one part of the body aches the whole body is affected by that pain, so should the Muslims be — that they become one body and the whole Muslim community become like a single frame, so that if any one Muslim suffers harm or is caught in some calamity or affliction, all Muslims share in his pain and grief and, all together, devise means to remove his suffering and distress. If, despite the claim of faith, this is not the case, then it should be understood that true and complete faith has not been attained. This very quality of the people of faith Allah has described in the Glorious Qur'an in this way: “Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are stern against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves.” (Al-Fath 29)

Today the need is that we look at ourselves — whether this believing quality that has been described in the Qur'an and Sunnah is present in us or not.
