English translation
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to visit Umm Haram bint Milhan (may Allah be pleased with her), and she would sometimes feed him. Umm Haram was the wife of Ubada ibn as-Samit. Once the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went there; she gave him food and applied fragrance to his head. Then he (ﷺ) rested for a while, and when he awoke he was smiling. Umm Haram says: I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the reason for your smiling?” He (ﷺ) said, “Some of my followers were shown to me who will fight as warriors in the way of Allah, journeying across the sea and seated upon thrones like kings.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray that Allah make me one of them.” He (ﷺ) prayed and said, “You will be among the first group.” In the time of Amir Mu'awiya (may Allah be pleased with him) this sea expedition set out for battle. On the return she fell from her mount and passed away. (Bukhari)

Umm Haram (may Allah be pleased with her) was the Prophet's foster maternal aunt. She had asked him to pray that she take part in a naval expedition. In the time of Amir Mu'awiya (may Allah be pleased with him) a fleet was prepared to attack the island of Cyprus, and many Companions took part in the campaign, among them Umm Haram (may Allah be pleased with her). She took part in the battle; victory was won, and as the army was returning and the noble lady, together with her husband Ubada ibn as-Samit, was about to mount her animal, she fell and gave up her soul to its Maker. She was honoured with martyrdom and was buried there. Glory be to Allah — such was the women's zeal for jihad that she had prayers made for martyrdom and, putting her life at risk, took part in the expedition.

The history of Islam tells us that Muslim women played their full part in jihad: alongside the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) they took up swords, rained down arrows, treated the wounded, nursed the sick, carried the martyrs to their resting places, guarded their belongings, and cooked food for these people.

We must not remain heedless of the role of woman in da'wah, tabligh and jihad, for if the need arises and the occasion presents itself, Islam has made even a woman responsible to go out for jihad. Regarding this the Qur'an has declared men and women both to be helpers, friends and supporters and comforters of one another: “The believing men and the believing women are protectors of one another.” (At-Tawba, 71)
