English translation
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Fasting and the Qur'an will both intercede for the servant — that is, for the servant who fasts by day and, standing before Allah Most High at night, recites or listens to His pure Word, the Qur'an. Fasting will say: O my Lord, I kept this servant from food, drink and the desires of the self; accept my intercession for him today (and deal with him with forgiveness and mercy). And the Qur'an will say: I kept him from sleep and rest at night; O Allah, accept my intercession for him today (and deal with him with pardon and favour). So the intercession of both fasting and the Qur'an will be accepted on that servant's behalf (and Paradise and forgiveness will be decreed for him), and he will be honoured with special royal graces."

Just as fasting and the noble Qur'an have a special connection with the blessed month of Ramadan, these two acts of worship also have a very deep connection and affinity with one another. The affinity of Ramadan with the Qur'an is no secret: out of the twelve months of the year, this very month was chosen for the revelation of the Qur'an. Because of Ramadan's extraordinary bond with the Qur'an, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give special attention to the recitation of the Qur'an in Ramadan.

Ramadan is a month of great sublimity, but what is the secret of its greatness and excellence? It is commonly thought that the secret of Ramadan's excellence lies in the worship of fasting, or in the night prayer (qiyam al-layl), tarawih, i'tikaf, and mighty acts of worship such as Laylat al-Qadr. But from the manner of the Qur'an's own expression it appears that the secret of Ramadan's greatness is the revelation of the Qur'an. Thus, making plain the reason for Ramadan's greatness, Allah Most High said:

"The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur'an was sent down as guidance for mankind and as clear proofs of guidance and the criterion between right and wrong." (Al-Baqarah — 185)

From this divine statement it is plain that Ramadan was given excellence over the other months because of the revelation of the Qur'an in it.

The distinguishing quality of the Qur'an is that it is guidance for people; but, according to the Qur'an's own statement, not everyone can be quenched at this fountain of guidance. What kind of people will be able to derive guidance from this Book? Explaining this, the Qur'an says:

"This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a means of guidance for the God-fearing." (Al-Baqarah — 2)

That is, the basic condition for benefiting from the Qur'an is taqwa (God-consciousness). On the other hand, stating the purpose of the obligation of fasting, the Qur'an said:

"O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become God-fearing." (Al-Baqarah — 183)

In this way a very deep affinity is found between Ramadan and the Qur'an: the month in which the Qur'an was sent down is the very month chosen for fasting; then in this same month night prayer, i'tikaf and other acts of worship were legislated, so that through the fasts and other deeds of Ramadan taqwa might be produced within the servants — taqwa being the basic condition for benefiting from the Qur'an. It is as though, in the month of the Qur'an's revelation, every year an effort is made — through the fasts and other worship — to make the servants capable of benefiting from the Qur'an. In truth, the greatness of the Qur'an should be fresh in a person's mind at all times; but if any month in the whole year is suited to its remembrance, to keeping its greatness present in mind, and to taking stock of oneself, it is the month of Ramadan, which is in reality the month of the Qur'an.

In this blessed hadith too a special connection between fasting and the Qur'an is mentioned. How fortunate are those people on whose behalf their fasts, their voluntary prayers, and the Qur'an they have recited will intercede and be accepted! What a moment of joy and delight it will be for them. May Allah Most High place us all, through His grace and bounty, among the fortunate ones. Amin!
