English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf for ten days (in the last ten days) every Ramadan; but in the year in which he ﷺ passed away, he observed i'tikaf for twenty (20) days.

I'tikaf is that a person spends the last ten days of the blessed month of Ramadan in the mosque for worship. Although i'tikaf is permissible on all the days of the year, to observe i'tikaf in the blessed month of Ramadan is a confirmed sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah).

Through fasting, a person's soul is brought into balance and made fit to fulfil the demands of the Shari'ah; and when he has passed twenty (20) days in this manner, it is as though one full course of spiritual treatment has been completed. Then Allah Most High wills that now His servant should abandon all unnecessary mixing with creation apart from Him, come to His door alone, and keep no attachment with anyone but Him. In the fast, the spouse was separated only for the day; and when the servant met this standard, He now, day and night, separates him from all that and reserves all his solitude for Himself, and says: now do your eating, drinking, rest and ease all at Our door; and let Our remembrance — which until now was scattered and divided, caught up in the affairs of the world — now, cut off from all engagements and turned away from all distractions, be only at Our door, so that in the filthy environment of the world one becomes wholly devoted and Our love settles firmly in the heart and mind, and over your heart and world there rules only the one Creator and Master, Lord of the earth and the heavens, the One, the All-Subduing.

In His Word, Allah Most High has given the servants guidance in detail:

"It has been made lawful for you, on the nights of fasting, to go to your wives. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. Allah knew that you used to deceive yourselves, so He turned to you in mercy and pardoned you. Now consort with them and seek what Allah has decreed for you, and eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread; then complete the fast until nightfall. And do not consort with your wives while you are in i'tikaf in the mosques. These are the limits of Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His signs to people, that they may become God-fearing." (Al-Baqarah — 187)

In the early days of Islam the rule was that after breaking the fast, until the Isha prayer, eating, drinking and consorting with one's wife were permitted; but once one had slept, none of these could be done, and these restrictions were severe. Through this verse Allah Most High lifted these restrictions and granted permission from the breaking of the fast until true dawn. However, in the state of i'tikaf there is no permission to consort with one's wife even at that time, and Allah Most High included this within the bounds of i'tikaf. The real spirit of i'tikaf is to turn towards Allah Most High and, cut off from creation, to be occupied and absorbed solely in the remembrance of the one Allah — to think of Him, reflect on Him, remember Him, and speak of Him — until, as one sits, the thought of Allah alone comes to fill the heart and mind, His remembrance settles in the heart, and instead of the creation the heart becomes attached to the Creator.

Would that now there were such a place;
sitting alone, their remembrance would never leave the heart.

Taking a thought into the mind and adopting solitude has a strange effect upon a person's heart and mind. Before the Qur'an was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for the remembrance of Allah Most High, adopted seclusion for a period in the cave of Hira, and it was in that solitude that the first revelation came, borne by the trustworthy angel Jibril; and from one narration it is known that this too was the month of the blessed Ramadan.

From this hadith it is known that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf every year in the last ten days of the blessed Ramadan; but in the year of his passing he observed i'tikaf for twenty (20) days. He observed twenty (20) days of i'tikaf, most probably, because he ﷺ had been given a sign that he would soon be taken from this world — and it is quite a natural thing that deeds such as i'tikaf should increase.
