English translation
Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six voluntary fasts in the month of Shawwal, this deed of his will be like fasting for a lifetime."

The month that begins as soon as the blessed month of Ramadan ends is Shawwal. The six fasts of Shawwal are among those voluntary acts that carry a very great reward, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ especially encouraged his Ummah to observe them. He gave his Ummah the glad tiding that whoever, after fasting Ramadan, keeps the six fasts of Shawwal deserves so much reward as though he had fasted the entire year. According to Allah's gracious law, in the Sharia the reward of a single good deed is at least tenfold, as Allah says:

"Whoever brings a good deed (on the Day of Judgement) shall have ten times the like thereof." (Al-An'am 160)

So when one fasts a whole month of Ramadan it brings the reward of ten months, and when one keeps the six fasts of Shawwal it brings the reward of sixty (60) days, so that together it amounts to the reward of twelve full months.

The scholars hold that whatever shortcomings occur in the fasts of Ramadan, Allah makes up that deficiency and lack through these six fasts of Shawwal — just as the relationship of these six fasts to the fasts of Ramadan is like that of the Sunnah prayers after the obligatory prayers, whereby Allah, on account of those Sunnah, makes up the shortcomings of our obligatory prayers.

Keeping the fasts of Shawwal consecutively, immediately after Eid, that is from the second day of Eid, is preferable and recommended, because Allah has said:

"O my Lord, I hastened to You so that You may be pleased." (Ta-Ha 84)

for to hasten in good works and to go ahead of one another is better. But if someone wishes to keep them intermittently — one or two at a time — up to the end of the month, he may do so; there is no harm in it. However, these six fasts should be completed within the month of Shawwal itself.
