English translation
Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The truest word ever spoken by a poet is this saying (that is, this hemistich) of the poet Labid ibn Rabi'ah: 'Behold! Everything apart from Allah is vain (perishing).'" (Bukhari and Muslim)
In the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and before it as well, poetry was widespread, and very few were the people who had no taste for it. Yet the Prophet ﷺ himself never composed a single line of verse; rather, the Qur'an makes clear that, by a special wisdom, the will of Allah kept him entirely protected from it. Thus it is stated in the fifth ruku' of Surah Ya-Sin, the meaning of which is: "We did not teach Prophet poetry, nor would it be fitting for him."
Some Companions asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about poetry — whether it is altogether blameworthy. He ﷺ replied that it is not so; rather, if the content of a poem is good then it is good, and if it is bad then it is bad (Daraqutni) — as is understood from the hadith above.
Labid was a famous poet of the age of ignorance (before Islam), yet even in that era his poetry was God-fearing and pure. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called his hemistich the truest word in the world of poetry because it is exactly identical in meaning to this saying of the Qur'an: "Everything is perishing except His Face." The second hemistich of this verse is: "And everything will, without doubt, pass away" (that is, every blessing of the world is bound to come to an end). Labid embraced Islam and gave up poetry altogether, saying: "The Qur'an is enough for me."
One hadith relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ listened to a Companion recite a hundred verses of Umayyah al-Thaqafi (a poet of the age of ignorance), and at each verse the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say, "Recite more." (Muslim)
'A'ishah (RA) relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to have a pulpit placed in the mosque for Hassan ibn Thabit (RA), so that, standing upon it, he could reply on behalf of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the insults the disbelievers hurled at his honour through their verses; and the Prophet ﷺ would also pray that Allah support him with the Holy Spirit, that is, Jibril the Trustworthy. (Shama'il of Tirmidhi)
Poetry is a pleasant element of human life; but just as the going of anything beyond its proper limit is harmful, so too excessive preoccupation with poetry is a cause of loss.
