English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ubayy ibn Ka'b: "Would you like me to teach you a surah the like of which — in its rank — has not been revealed in the Torah, nor in the Injil (Gospel), nor in the Zabur (Psalms), nor even in the Qur'an?" Ubayy said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, tell me that surah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How do you recite in your prayer?" So Ubayy recited Surah al-Fatiha to him (saying, this is the surah I recite and this is how I recite it). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, no surah like it has been revealed in the Injil, nor in the Zabur, nor even in the Qur'an itself. This is 'the seven oft-repeated verses and the Great Qur'an' which Allah Most High has given me." (Tirmidhi)
In verse 87 of Surah al-Hijr, Allah Most High, mentioning His special favour upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said: "Indeed We have given you the seven oft-repeated verses and the Great Qur'an." In this hadith the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), pointing to this very verse, explained that it is Surah al-Fatiha — a surah so great and so full of blessing that no surah of its rank was revealed in any heavenly Book, nor is there any surah of its rank even in the Qur'an.
Surah al-Fatiha is the very first surah of the Qur'an, which is why it is called al-Fatiha ("the Opening"); it is, as it were, the preface of the Qur'an and encompasses the themes of the whole Qur'an. In the traditions this surah is also named Umm al-Qur'an, al-Sab' al-Mathani, al-Qur'an al-'Azim, al-Shifa, al-Salah and by other names. It is a very short surah of only seven verses, yet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said of it that it is the summary of the entire Qur'an — the essence of all that is set out in detail across the thirty parts of the Qur'an lies in these seven verses. So much importance is given to it in worship that reciting it is obligatory in every rak'ah of the prayer; whoever does not recite Surah al-Fatiha, his prayer is not valid. Such is its rank in prayer, and prayer holds such a place in the religion that it is called the pillar of the faith. This is because it is Allah's will that when the believing servant recites Surah al-Fatiha in every rak'ah of the prayer, the summary of the Holy Qur'an remains fresh in his mind at all times.
