English translation
Hazrat Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “I know a verse such that, if people were to act upon it, it would suffice them. The verse is: (And whoever adopts the fear of Allah (taqwa), He will make for him a way out of every difficulty, and will provide for him from where he does not even imagine).” (Musnad Ahmad, Ibn Majah and Darimi)

This is the well-known verse of Surah At-Talaq. It tells us that taqwa is no ordinary quality. To adopt taqwa means that the servant acknowledges the greatness and majesty of Allah and gives preference to Allah’s will over his own; the attainment of Allah’s pleasure and approval becomes the true purpose of his life. In such a case Allah will not leave him in a state of helplessness; He will necessarily open for him a way out of anxieties and hardships. It is also beyond imagining that such a person should be left deprived of sustenance; Allah can arrange provision for him in a way he could never have supposed beforehand. Allah has complete power over everything, and whoever relies upon Him can never be left in despair.
After faith in Allah, the Last Day and the chain of prophethood, one of the things the Qur’an has emphasised most — and which it has made, as it were, the pivot of man’s success and felicity — is taqwa. The original, literal meaning of the word taqwa is “to guard oneself.” In the terminology of the Shariah it is used for guarding oneself against sins, and when it is related to Allah its meaning becomes fearing Allah — that is, to guard against and fear disobedience and sin against Allah. The real essence of taqwa is that the servant, having conviction in Allah and the Last Day, then lives his life with thought and caution, fearing Allah’s displeasure, His seizing, and the punishment and reckoning of the Hereafter.
In this verse two blessings of taqwa are mentioned. First, that for the one who adopts taqwa Allah opens a way of deliverance — deliverance meaning being saved from all the difficulties and calamities of this world and of the Hereafter too. Thus the meaning of the verse is that Allah opens for the God-fearing person — that is, the one who guards against sins — a way of deliverance from every difficulty and affliction of this world and the next. The second blessing is that He grants him provision from a place he never even imagined. Here too “provision” means everything one needs, whether of this world or the Hereafter. For the God-fearing believer, Allah’s promise in this verse is that He eases his every difficulty, takes responsibility for his needs, and fulfils his needs through ways he could never have supposed.
Allahu Akbar! How great and precious are the goodness and blessings of taqwa. Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: this is the greatest verse of the Noble Qur’an that prescribes the remedy for deliverance from sorrows and griefs.
Another proof that taqwa is a cause of obtaining provision is this verse of the Holy Qur’an:
“And had the people of the towns believed (and guarded against evil deeds, disbelief and polytheism), We would surely have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied, so We seized them for what they used to do.” (Al-A’raf - 96).
